SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – On Wednesday, November 09, 2016, South Suburban College presented their annual Veterans’ Day Celebration in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) with a “Presentation of Colors,” a guest speaker and a student/staff panel. The “Presentation of Colors” was presented by South Holland School District 151’s CSWAP (Coolidge Students with Academic Pride). The students were dressed in full color, our flag was presented, and the Pledge of Allegiance recited. Following their presentation, SSC Nursing student Aarin Adams performed a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem.
The guest speaker was Bill Browne, Director of Cook County Veterans Affairs. Mr. Browne disseminated helpful information for veterans as well as spouses and children of veterans. His speech was insightful and students asked questions pertaining to his presentation. Additionally, he brought along fact-filled brochures from the Cook County Veterans Affairs office that were made available to attendees.
After a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers, the panel discussion began. Panelists gave recollections of their service experiences along with what they learned. The majority cited “discipline and teamwork” as the greatest assets they acquired. Additionally, lifelong learning was stressed by several panelists and Odell Braziel made sure to mention that he utilized his Veterans Benefits right here at SSC. Panelists included: Matt Beasland, SSC Dean of Adult Education; Odell Braziel, Programmer, SSC Information Technology; Bill Browne, Director of Cook County Veterans Affairs; and SSC students Pamela Dorsey and Tiffane Ford. Student attendees asked pertinent questions and the program ended with a resounding applause and “Thank You” to the veterans who participated and those who could not.
