CONTINUITY OF EDUCATION
Will students experience any interruption in their classes?
SSC is committed to maintaining educational progress with minimal disruption. In the event of a strike, classes that can transition to remote instruction will do so. Hands-on lab courses and skills programs (such as Cosmetology and Barbering) will resume in person as soon as it is feasible.
What happens if a strike begins before the end of the fall semester?
If a strike occurs before the end of the fall semester, SSC will ensure any lost instructional time is made up, meeting the required 75 days of instruction so that students complete their coursework as scheduled.
Will the start of the spring semester be delayed if a strike is ongoing?
Yes, if a strike begins at the start of the spring semester, the semester’s start will be delayed until SSC is able to resume instruction.
FACULTY PARTICIPATION DURING A STRIKE
Will instructors who continue teaching during the strike need to make up instructional time?
Faculty members who choose to continue teaching during the strike are asked to inform the administration, which will determine if additional instructional time is required once regular operations resume.
Can faculty and staff cross the picket line if they choose?
Yes, any faculty and staff who decide to cross the picket line may do so. SSC will coordinate with campus police to ensure safe access for all employees who wish to continue working on campus.
STUDENT COMMUNICATIONS AND SUPPORT
How will students be informed about changes to their classes?
The administration will update students through the D2L platform, outlining any necessary modifications to ensure students’ academic progression is uninterrupted.
Will athletic events and other scheduled activities continue as planned?
Yes, athletic events and other college-sponsored activities will proceed as scheduled. The administration will work closely with the Vice President of Student & Enrollment Services to ensure these events are unaffected.
CAMPUS ACCESSIBILITY AND SAFETY
Will SSC campuses remain open during a strike?
Both the main campus and the Oak Forest Center will stay open during regular hours of operation. Campus police are involved in the planning to ensure the safety and security of all students, faculty, and staff.
What is SSC doing to ensure a safe environment for those who choose to work?
SSC will collaborate with campus police to provide safe entry and exit points for staff who decide to cross the picket line. Campus security will be actively involved to support a respectful and secure environment for everyone.
EMPLOYMENT AND BENEFITS DURING A STRIKE
Will striking employees receive pay and benefits?
Striking employees will not receive pay or salary advances during the strike. Paid leave benefits are not available for employees who are actively striking. Those on pre-approved sabbatical, FMLA, or sick leave should consult HR to clarify their specific circumstances.
What happens to health insurance coverage for striking employees?
Health insurance coverage will be paused for actively striking employees, and COBRA eligibility notices will be issued as applicable.
Will service credits toward retirement continue to accrue for striking employees?
No, retirement service credits will not accrue for employees who participate in the strike.
EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS
How will SSC handle communications with external vendors and partners?
The Vice President of Administration will maintain regular communication with contractors, commercial carriers, and service providers to ensure SSC’s operations remain uninterrupted.
How will SSC communicate with students and the public about the strike?
Dr. Kellie Martin, Executive Director of Public Relations and Resource Development, will serve as the primary media contact, working closely with President Dr. Lynette D. Stokes. A dedicated email, strikequestions@ssc.edu, will be available for inquiries. All updates will also be shared on D2L and other official platforms.
