SSC PLAYHOUSE to Host Open Auditions for ‘Six Degrees Of Separation’ February 17th

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– The SSC PLAYHOUSE of South Suburban College announces Auditions for its production of John Guare’s Tony-Award and Pulitzer-Prize winning 1990 classic American play, Six Degrees Of Separation on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, from 4:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m. in Lecture Hall A on the Main Campus in South Holland.

No experience is needed, and the auditions are open to everyone; all SSC students and community residents are encouraged to participate. There are roles for 16 actors and actresses between the ages of 18 and 65 of all sizes, races and colors. Rehearsals will begin immediately and will be held during spring break. They will be held on (Monday), Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:15 p.m.–9:45 p.m., and on Saturdays from 12 noon–4 p.m. Monday rehearsals will begin on March 30, 2015. There are no Friday, Saturday evening or Sunday rehearsals except during tech and show weeks. Come to the audition prepared to list all class, work or other scheduling time conflicts, as rehearsals are mandatory, although arrangements may be made. Bobbie Saltzman of Beverly, SSC Playhouse Director and theatre program head, will direct the production.

Six Degrees of Separation is a contemporary American classic that rips the pretentious mask off of middle-class hypocrisy and prejudice and makes us question the value and the meaning of our lives. “Six Degrees” opened at Lincoln Center in New York City to rave reviews with well-known stars Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order) as Paul, who was played by actor Will Smith in the film version, and Stockard Channing (Grease) as Ouisa, a role she reprised for the film. According to John Guare, the play took a lifetime to write. The hugely successful playwright scored many hits, however, including The House Of Blue Leaves, The Sweet Smell Of Success and A Free Man Of Color, songs in Sophisticated Ladies and the screenplay for “Atlantic City,” to name a few.

In Six Degrees Of Separation, the lives of two affluent NYC art dealers are turned upside down when the buzzer to their Central Park West condo rings. Enter Paul, a well-dressed young college man who quickly identifies himself as a friend of their children. At first regarded with suspicion, the couple is won over by Paul’s charm, intelligence and intimate knowledge of their children with whom he says he attends college. When Paul identifies himself as the son of Sidney Poitier, and easily wins the delight and favor and money of their wealthy investor-friend, the four become privileged “great friends.” But when Paul exposes the sophisticated New Yorkers to his personal life the veneer begins to crumble for the social climbers. Although he is eventually uncovered as a con artist in search of a family, perhaps, Paul’s life is far less a lie than their own.

The show will run Tuesday, April 21st through Saturday, April 25th at 8:00 p.m., with 2:00 p.m. matinees on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th. South Suburban College is located at 15800 South State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, and 57, and is also accessible by Metra. Free, ample, well-lit parking is available. For more information, please email bsaltzman@ssc.edu.

Pictured from left to right: SSC Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli accepts the COE accounting award from college Treasurer Tim Pollert at their January meeting of the Board of Trustees.

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded South Suburban College with a Certificate of Excellence (COE) in Financial Reporting for its preparation and issuance of a school system comprehensive annual report for Fiscal Year 2013. This represents the 24th consecutive year SSC has received the award for financial reporting. SSC Treasurer Tim Pollert presented the COE to SSC Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli at the college’s January board meeting.

“This award is a reflection of our efforts to be fiscally responsible for the benefit of our students and taxpayers,” said Chairman Zuccarelli. “It is an honor and distinction to receive the COE 24 years in a row. I would like to thank our administration and staff, especially our Business & Accounting Department and Treasurer Tim Pollert for their hard work.”

The COE award is one of the highest recognitions a college can receive for their audited financial statements, confirming the school’s commitment to financial accountability and transparency. ASBO, founded in 1910, is a professional association of more than 5,000 members that provides programs and services to promote the highest standards of school business management practices, professional growth, and the effective use of educational resources.

SSC Treasurer Tim Pollert added, “This is the gold standard for financial reporting. Not only is it a feather in our cap as an institution, it also can be quantified with the college’s ability to get more favorable interest rates such as when issuing bonds. I would like to sincerely thank the board for their clear guidance and support over the years.”

Awaken Sleeping Beauty at South Suburban College

BeautyCast600
Sleeping Beauty cast pictured Top Row, from left to right: Jamel Williams, Ashley Orendorff, Angela Martin, Catherine Hundt Middle Row: Kevin Hathaway, Paul Braun, Laura Tiemens, Eric Pradelski Seated: Pat Nevins, Sandra Wagner

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Children’s Theatre Company of South Suburban College is producing a play geared for young audiences in January. Sleeping Beauty will run on Saturdays, January 10 and 17, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and Monday through Friday, January 12th through January 16th at 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Award-winning playwright Michele L. Vacca’s adaptation of the classic children’s tale of Sleeping Beauty, is an amusing version of the Perrault romance, with just the right balance of comedy and suspense. King Philip (Pat Nevins of Homewood) and Queen Eleanor (Sandra Wagner of Lansing), rulers of Pharoffland, grieve because they have no child. Overhearing this, the three good fairies, Rose Petal (Angela Martin of Midlothian), Moon Beam (Catherine Hundt of Thornton) and Twinkletoes (Jamel Williams of Chicago Heights) combine their powers and the following spring a little princess is born.

The celebration is ruined by the dramatic arrival of Belladonna (Ashley Orendorff of Thornton), the evil fairy of Pharoffland. Bella is so angry at not being invited to the party, that she puts a terrible curse on baby Rosalind. The three good fairies have enough power to lighten the curse. Now the princess will only fall asleep for 100 years. The fairies place a magical rose hedge around the sleeping princess and vow to protect her. As the years pass, Princes arrive, hoping to rescue Rosalind (Laura Tiemes of South Holland). First on the scene is Prince Albert Egbert (Kevin Hathaway of Park Forest) who only wants material for his book of the most famous and unusual magic spells of the last century. The next attempt is made by Prince Orlando Leonardo Malvolio Smith (Eric Pradelski of South Holland), but he is more concerned with the hedge of thorns ruining his brand new suit.

When the 100 years are almost over, Prince Stephen of Stratford (Paul Braun of Lansing) arrives. Bella tries to interfere, but Twinkletoes suggests that Prince Stephen kiss Rosalind. He does so and she awakens, since he is the “right” prince. Belladonna disappears from Pharoffland and Princess Rosalind and Prince Stephen live happily ever after, just as you might expect. Rounding out the cast are Heather Young of Chicago as the Narrator and Paul Braun of Lansing as Count Frederick.

The play is directed by Lansing resident and Kindig Performing Arts Center manager Ellie Shunko. Set design is by Dean Scalzitti of Hegewisch. Lighting design is by Jon Jenkins of Chicago. The costume designer is Joanna Tassin of Park Forest, with stage management by June Wagner of Lansing. Anne Begora of Hegwisch is designing the props for the production.

Sleeping Beauty is suitable for young and old alike. Tickets are $5 each. Group rates are available. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the 24/7 box office voicemail line at (708) 210-5741. You may also reserve tickets by e-mail at boxoffice@ssc.edu. Reservations for weekday performances are required as many shows are already sold out.

South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294. Free, ample parking is available.

South Suburban College to Host Paralegal Open House at Oak Forest Campus

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– South Suburban College will be hosting an Open House for its Paralegal Program on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in Room 5190 at the Oak Forest Center.

Attendees will learn about an exciting career that is expected to grow 18% through 2020 according to the US Department of Labor. Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/Legal Assistant curriculum, including the Associate Degree and certificate programs. In addition, former students from the program, working as paralegals, will be present to answer questions.

The curriculum prepares students to work in a variety of legal environments including civil and criminal litigation, insurance, banking, public and governmental agencies, law offices and corporate legal departments. Emphasis is placed on the development of core skills in legal research and writing techniques including compilation and analysis of data, understanding legal vocabulary, law office technology, and preparation of legal documents.

“Whether you are looking for a change in your career path or looking to begin a career, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the law,” says Jason Cieslik, J.D., Coordinator for the Legal Studies Program.

SSC has the only American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program in the Chicago Southland region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workforce. The college also requires that all of the instructors in the program are lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction.

While the majority of the paralegal classes are offered at the Oak Forest Center (conveniently located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue), some classes are offered online and some are offered at the Main Campus in South Holland.

For more information, please contact Mr. Cieslik at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2579 or email JCieslik@ssc.edu. Spring classes begin Monday, January 12, 2015.

MB Financial Bank Presents $25,000 to South Suburban College for Scholarship & Technology Support

mb Financial Presents a check to SSC

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL –MB Financial Bank (MB) presented a $25,000 check to South Suburban College (SSC) recently at their Main Campus in South Holland. The donation is a part of MB’s $45,000 commitment to support a renovation of the college’s primary conference room and to establish an endowed scholarship through the SSC Foundation (SSCF). The commitment includes an additional $20,000 endowment over the next four years to permanently establish an MB Financial Bank Scholarship Fund at the college. The donation developed through a long-standing partnership between the South Holland branch and its neighboring community college.

“MB Financial Bank and the MB Financial Charitable Foundation believe that education has the power to transform people and communities,” said Vicky Arroyo, President of the MB Community Development Corporation.  “As part of our long-standing commitment to the communities we serve, we’re delighted to help South Suburban College achieve its mission as it brings an affordable education to a large and diverse student population. By working together, MB and South Suburban can help even more people achieve their goals.”

The conference room will be called the MB Financial Bank Suite. Located in the most high traffic area of the college near the Atrium and Cafeteria, the space serves as SSC’s most utilized conference room for meetings and workshops. The renovation will include new signage, modern furnishings and the most current presentation and instructional technologies. The room will be renamed with MB Financial Bank Suite signage heading into the spring semester, and SSC plans to complete the project early next year.

With the cost of higher education on the rise and the level of state funding on the decline, students are finding it more and more difficult to afford a full-time college education.   The MB Financial Bank Scholarship Fund endowment will allow the SSC Foundation to award a new MB Scholarship every year. It will add another opportunity for students to the SSCF’s comprehensive range of scholarship awards based on a variety of qualifications. In 2014, the SSCF awarded over $100,000 for the sixth consecutive year, and has now awarded $1.6 million in scholarships since 1989.

“I would like to thank my friend Don De Graff and MB Financial Bank in South Holland for their commitment to education and improving our community,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Chairman of the SSC Board of Trustees. “I would also like to thank the wonderful people from the MB Financial Bank Community Development Corporation and MB Marketing who took the time to visit our campus and speak with our students. This project was truly a team effort that will provide some financial relief to the college and our students while also serving as an extension of the MB Financial Bank mission.”

Have You Made Your New Year’s Resolution? Become an Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutor at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to make a New Year’s resolution and volunteer as a tutor, or encourage someone you know to take advantage of this free program.

New tutor-training sessions will take place on the Main Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. beginning January 20th through February 5th, 2015 in Room 1243c. The tutor training is an 18-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring is scheduled by the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites.

Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

Tutors will receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

If you would like to volunteer or know someone who would benefit from these services, please contact LaKisha Hillard, M. Ed, Coordinator of the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email lhillard@ssc.edu. South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, Illinois.

Give a Gift of Scholarship this Holiday Season Through the South Suburban College Foundation Donor Drive

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) is seeking year-end gifts from those who wish to help make a difference in the lives of local college students who need assistance.  The SSCF Scholarship Donor Drive will continue through the end of the year, providing both a charitable gift opportunity and tax-deduction for all donors.

The SSCF This support provides scholarship assistance each year to many students who otherwise would be unlikely to begin or complete their college education. One-hundred percent (100%) of Donor Drive donations benefit scholarship and student assistance funds. Whether it is a high school graduate, an unemployed resident looking for a career change, or a single parent pursuing their college degree for the first time, the SSC Foundation offers scholarship assistance to all students in need. Helping students achieve their college dream can give them the tools to improve their lives and their communities.

Scholarship opportunities are critical for SSC students.  Many are struggling to balance family, employment, and school responsibilities while they are often unable to receive Financial Aid. The majority of SSC scholarship recipients do not qualify for any other type of financial assistance. Scholarship money is provided primarily through the annual fall Scholarship Donor Drive.

All scholarship contributions to the SSCF are 100% tax-deductible (TIN: 23- 7191736). The SSCF staff works cooperatively with individuals and organizations to develop a donor plan of any level. New scholarships can also be established with a $750 donation.

Donations may be made online at www.ssc.edu/foundation via PayPal, to foundation@ssc.edu or mailed to:

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to announce two new exhibitions coming to galleries on the Main Campus in South Holland.

First, an exhibition titled The X-Ray Series will be on display October 21st through a closing reception with artist Michael Hopkins on November 17th from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Hopkins has exhibited throughout the United States, in Canada and Europe. He has art in numerous museum permanent collections including The Art Institute of Chicago. The X-Ray Series was completed between 2004 and 2007. The media is white ink on slate comprised of slightly altered images of both human and animal X-rays. Twenty (20) pieces from The X-Ray Series will exhibit at SSC as part a larger collection on display internationally including The Progressive Art Collection, Mayfield Village, Ohio–rated as one of the best collections by Forbes Magazine, Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, Wisconsin, and permanent collections at The University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor Michigan and The Wellcome Trust Collection, London, England–Nobel Peace Prize winner James Watson spoke at the opening.
“I was interested in The X-Ray Series at the beginning based on formal elements,” said Hopkins. “From there, I became intrigued by how looking at the human and animal skeletal system may evolve into other topics.”

Isolation
“Isolation” is part of the Faint Perceptions exhibition coming to South Suburban College’s Lee Dulgar Gallery courtesy of artist Connie Wolfe.

Additionally, Faint Perceptions is an exhibition by artist Connie Wolfe that will run October 27th through the closing reception on November 20th from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.  Three installations will be featured in the exhibit. Wolfe earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Kenosha, Wisconsin, and his Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Wolfe is inspired by the rich colors and textures in natural environments that typically go unnoticed in the everyday rituals of our society.

“Most recently I have been making mixed-media installations that are pieces on their own, yet they become the inspiration for my two-dimensional work,” said Wolfe. “This process simulates my experience to nature in that subtle differences in light, time of day, and vantage point of the installations are used as source material for my drawings, prints, and paintings. As a result, the subject of all of my work shares the hidden intricacies inherent in our environment.”

The X-Ray Series can be viewed during gallery hours in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery on the 4th floor in the Art & Design hallway. Faint Perceptions will be exhibiting in the Lee Dulgar Gallery on the first floor near the college Atrium. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. Representative Jones Secures Additional Funds for Adult Education Technology at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–State Representative Thaddeus Jones (D-29th District) has announced a $225,000 legislative award for South Suburban College’s Division of Adult Education. This represents the second consecutive year Jones has secured funds to enable SSC’s Adult Education to create new state-of-the-art technological classrooms for its English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE) programs.

“Technology is essential to everything we do today, and it starts with education,” said Representative Jones. “The Illinois GED Exams have now become entirely computer-based, so it is critical to modernize these programs to help more adult students succeed in the classroom and in the workforce.”

Funds have been used to purchase Epson Interactive White Boards, classroom projectors, laptops, charging carts, student tables and more. The new grant funds will continue the classroom upgrades with enhanced technology including expansion of programs at the college’s Oak Forest Center and Calumet City adult education sites.

“We are very pleased to receive these funds for programs that are so important to thousands of adults in our community who need our help,” said SSC Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli. “Our mission is to help residents improve their education and employment through lifelong learning. We are thankful to Representative Jones for securing these funds and sharing our commitment to education.”

SSC’s Division of Adult Education offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to build the basic skills required for success. ABE helps men and women whose skill levels are below the ninth grade, and ASE helps men and women whose skill levels are between the ninth and twelfth grade. Many adults choose to further build on these skills and pursue a high school education through the High School Equivalency (HSE) program which will develop the skills required to pass the GED exams. Additionally, English as a Second Language (ESL) allows non-native students to improve their English skills from beginning to advanced levels. All courses are offered free of charge. For the purpose of compliance with Section 511 of Public Law 101-166 (the Stevens Amendment) Federal funds of $307,398 provides approximately 36% of the support of these programs.

In Fiscal Year 2014, SSC serviced 660 students through adult education programs including approximately 40 students that received their GED certificates, many of whom moved on to their postsecondary education at SSC.

For more information, please contact Jane Ellen Stocker, Vice President of Enrollment and Community Education, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2227, email jstocker@ssc.edu or visit www.ssc.edu. SSC’s Main Campus is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

Starting a Family Business?

Wednesday, October 8, 8:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Family businesses are similar to any other business, but when you add the family dynamic to the equation, it gets complicated.  This workshop examines advantages and disadvantages and takes a realistic look at safeguarding family relationships in a business environment. Taking Your Business Idea from Concept to Reality
Wednesdays, November 12 and 19, 8:45 a.m. – 10:30 am

Coming up with ideas is the easy part; executing the idea is the hard part! Most entrepreneurs focus more on the ideas and less on how to organize for action. This two-part series workshop includes two sessions on consecutive weeks.   The first session is intended to stimulate ideas into business actions. Attendees will learn to become a business thinker by examining and developing an action plan document. The second session the following week is an open panel discussion of selected summaries, also intended to stimulate business thinking. Attendees will learn to sell their ideas professionally, enthusiastically and concisely.

Moon Over Buffalo Performances Coming to South Suburban College Stage

8/27/2014

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The PAC Rats Theatre Company of South Suburban College will present Moon Over Buffalo, Ken Ludwig’s madcap backstage comedy. Performances will take place in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on the Main Campus on September 19, 20 and 26 at 8:00 p.m., September 27 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and September 28 at 2:00 p.m.

It’s 1953 and fading stars George and Charlotte Hay (Paul Braun of Lansing and Heather Young of Burnham) are on tour in Buffalo, NY with a repertory consisting of Cyrano de Bergerac and Noel Coward’s Private Lives. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingenue (Ashley Orendorff of Thornton), they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Enabled by Charlotte’s deaf old stage manager mother, who hates every bone in George’s body (Betty Owens of Glenwood), a case of mistaken identity causes hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing.

Richard (Martell Jefferson of South Holland), Charlotte’s would-be suitor, makes an appearance and tries to woo her away from George. Meanwhile, the Hays’ temperamental daughter Rosalind (Cathy Hundt of Thornton) splits time between fiancé Howard (Kevin Hathaway of Park Forest) and ex-fiancé Paul (Charlie Furtek of Lansing), who works as the company’s stage manager.

The hopeful actors sprint through the tangle of confusion to produce a woefully misbegotten mixture of two different plays in their hoped-for presentation piece, and in the play’s climactic scene, manage to set everything right by still more series of coincidences and mishaps.

The play is directed by Lansing resident Sandra Wagner. Set design is by Dean Scalzitti of Hegewisch. Lighting design and fight choreography are by Laura Tiemens of South Holland. The costume designer is JoAnna Tassin of Park Forest, with Melody Jones of Calumet City as her assistant. Angela Martin of Midlothian is the stage manager. June Wagner of Lansing is designing the props for the production and Jordan Swierczyna of Robbins is the sound designer.

Tickets are just $8 for adults, $6 for seniors 55 or better, $6 for students. Call the 24/7 box office voicemail line at (708) 210-5741. You may also reserve tickets by e-mail at boxoffice@ssc.edu. South Suburban College student and employee discounts, as well as group rates are also available.

South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294. Free, ample, well-lit parking is available.

Art Exhibitions on Display at South Suburban College

8/21/2014

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present a new exhibition titled Trail to Arcadia on display August 25th through September 17th. Trail to Arcadia is the show’s title piece and the exhibition of watercolor paintings from Chicago-based artist Anna Zanic on display in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery at the South Holland Campus August 18th through September 15, 2014.

Zanic was born in Vinkovci, Croatia in 1976. She earned her Master’s of Fine Arts from at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, in 2002. In this body of work, the abstracted notion of atmospheric landscape is a metaphorical expression of life’s mysterious and elusive path. Works are built with layers of watercolor washes, intermixed with dynamic lines, scribbles and marks of ink drawing. There is a quiet tension between the watercolor’s fluidity, softness and calm, vs. the dynamic, rhythm and energy of drawing.

Trail to Arcadia joins another exhibition at SSC already on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery titled Welcome to Earth. Welcome to Earth is select body of ceramic sculptures from artist Matthew Groves that display through September 15th. Welcome to Earth is both figurative and narrative, reflecting Groves’ unique point of view, and demonstrating his passion for craft and traditional forms.

The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is located on the 1st Floor near the Atrium and the Thiel Gallery is on the 4th floor in the Art & Design hallway. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays.

For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2445 or visit www.ssc.edu/art . SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

Breakfast with BCI Workshop Series Presents Building Business Success with Emotional Intelligence

8/20/2014

South Holland, IL– The South Suburban College Business & Career Institute (BCI) presents a Breakfast with BCI Workshop titled Building Business Success with Emotional Intelligence, facilitated by Alexandra Glumac, MS, NCC, LCPC, RDDP, CWA, BCI Client Solutions Specialist. Success in business depends on our ability to understand and effectively manage emotions–in others and ourselves. It is not enough to have the technical skills to do our jobs well, it is just as important to possess the necessary interpersonal skills in order to be effective. Emotional Intelligence (EI), loosely defined, is one’s ability to use emotions intelligently and appropriately in different situations. It is becoming the “new yardstick” by which employees are being evaluated. Attendees of this workshop will learn the Four Functions of EI, the Five Competencies of EI and several proven strategies to promote and strengthen EI.

The cost of the event and refreshments is $30 per person, or $25 per person if three or more individuals from the same company attend. Reservations are required by September 15th and walk-ins will be charged $40.

To register, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2346 or email AGlumac@ssc.edu . South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

Celebrate International Literacy Day by becoming a volunteer tutor!

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–SSOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of this free program.

New tutor-training sessions will take place on the Main Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. from August 26th through September 11th in Room 1243c. The tutor training is an 18-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; and Midlothian Public Library. Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Division of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

Tutors will receive one free professional development hour through this program in Adult Education, Reading, Writing, and many other subjects. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

In just its third year of operation, SSC’s Adult Volunteer Literacy Program has enlisted hundreds of volunteers to date and is already an award-winning program, earning two prestigious Spotlight on Service (SOS) Awards from the Secretary of State and Illinois Press Association. Volunteer tutor Mary Gercken won an SOS Award in 2012 and a literacy learner Tennie Fitts won the Spotlight on Achievement SOS Award in 2013. Gerken and Fitts are featured in a video accessible on YouTube entitled Improving Lives through Literacy. Also featured is author Ruth J. Colvin–a 96 year old SSC alumnus. (Visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ttli_Xa73pc to see the video or access it from www.ssc.edu under the “Adult Education” link.)

SSC Approved for New Manufacturing Certificate Program

7/22/2014

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) was notified in a letter last week from the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) of their approval for a new Manufacturing Basics 16-hour Certificate, effective immediately. SSC plans to roll out the new credit program at the start of the fall semester–August 18, 2014.

Within SSC’s district and region, manufacturing companies are expanding their workforce to include a variety of levels of skills. For example, a local furniture manufacturer has tripled its workers in the past five years and is now in the process of adding still another location. This new certificate will prepare students for entry-level and promotional opportunities in the field of manufacturing. The courses are designed to provide students with foundational information, principles, theories and techniques, and current technologies necessary to work in a manufacturing environment. Students will be introduced to manufacturing scenarios to enhance the learning process, as well as have the opportunity to conduct research and interviews of those who have been successful. They will receive information developed by a labor market-based program as well as industry-recognized credentials from the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC), by taking the four assessments leading to the Certified Production Technician certification. Math is included through a course that will be contextualized for the manufacturing environment. The final course will be an internship, allowing students a hands-on opportunity to be part of the world of manufacturing.

“We are extremely pleased to receive these INAM funds so that we can meet the needs of our workforce while helping residents achieve gainful employment,” said Becky Admave, Dean of Extension Services. “This program could be very beneficial to manufacturers in the south suburban and northwest Indiana region, and we look forward to putting it into action immediately alongside our other new programs.”

The new program is funded by the INAM grant. INAM (Illinois Network for Advanced Manufacturing) is a network of 21 community colleges across the state of Illinois. INAM has been tasked, through a multi-million dollar grant from the Department of Labor, to train and certify students for entry into the rewarding field of advanced manufacturing. The funding has assisted community colleges throughout Illinois to upgrade their advanced manufacturing facilities with the latest equipment, expand welding and mechatronics labs, and update curricula to reflect the changing face of manufacturing.

SSC and its Business & Career Institute (BCI) have been called upon by local manufactures over the past few years more than ever to develop curriculum to meet the wide range of skills needed for their growing labor demands. SSC also opened a state-of-the-art Welding Lab last January and is offering a variety of welding classes crossing over several new programs. Plans are in place for a comprehensive credit welding curriculum coming in 2015. Additionally, BCI is near completion on the construction of a high-tech, hands-on Manufacturing Lab at the college’s Oak Forest Center. Other new cutting-edge, short-term programs include Industrial Maintenance Technician, Highway Construction Careers Training Program (HCCTP), Industrial/Brownfield Safety, Land Reuse and Public Safety Certificate, Green Entrepreneur and Green Construction, and more.

“Growth in manufacturing and in the TWL [transportation, warehousing and logistics] fields is both significant and rapidly evolving in our region, and represents an opportunity for our area,” said Admave. “This new program is just another step to ensure that SSC plays a vital role to foster this growth and provide the career pathways for our residents now and in the future.”

SSC’s Business & Career Institute serves as a regional headquarters for workforce preparation, employee training, business development and technology deployment. BCI provides training, consulting, and economic and business development resources for the Chicago Southland. For their efforts, BCI has been recognized as a High Performance Business & Industry Center by the Center for Adult and Experiential Learning, among other accolades.

For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2522. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. The college’s Oak Forest Center is located at 16333 S. Kilbourn, Oak Forest, Illinois.
