Steve Sherrell Art Exhibition Coming to South Suburban College’s Thiel & Photo Four Galleries October-November

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL –The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled 25 Years of Computer Art Exploration by Steve Sherrell. The exhibition will be on display in both the Dorothea Thiel and Photo Four Galleries October 23-November 17. On November 1, Mr. Sherrell will deliver a lecture at 12:15 in room 4431 with an artist reception to follow.

After studying at the School of the Art Institute with Ray Yoshida, Sherrell began exhibiting on a regular basis at many of the city’s great galleries: locally, nationally and internationally. In the early 1990’s he began doing digital artwork on an Amiga computer and taught Computer Art for 20 years. His experimental nature has led him to explore ways that hand-made techniques could merge with computer generated visuals to create unusual and original hybrids.

Sherrell stated, “I studied painting at the School of the Art Institute but became enamored with making computer based artwork. Soon I was showing my digital work alongside my paintings. As an artist, I have always followed the paths that most interested me; the ones that I felt gave back the most fulfilling results. I have little concern for markets, trends, or pressure from peer groups to conform. To me, the notion of discovery has held my interest more than the notion of production.”

He add, “Overall, I have produced a great amount of work in my long career and continue to find new things that excite and interest me. The challenge of art is one that has always been a great motivator for me. To wake up every morning and face something interesting and exciting has been the joy of my life.”

The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. The Dorothea Thiel and Photo Four Galleries are located on the college’s fourth floor and are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. They are closed on weekends and holidays. The galleries are supported in part by the SSC Foundation. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. For more information contact (708) 596-2000 ext. 2316.

SSC Celebrates National Information Literacy Month

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – On October 1, 2009, President Barack Obama issued the first National Proclamation establishing October as “National Information Literacy Awareness Month.” This was the first time this important 21st century skill set received federal attention at the National Level. In today’s digital world, people who are information literate know how to find, access, and evaluate information to improve their health, their environment, their education and workplace performance. Having this skill set empowers them to interpret and make informed decisions about their lives, in essence, taking more responsibility for their own individual welfare and that of our nation.

The South Suburban College Library began celebrating October as “Information Literacy Month” in 2014 and this year marks our 4th Annual Celebration. Our opening day event will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 2:00pm in the Library. The agenda will include Guest Speaker Representative William Davis (D) 30th District. His many committee assignments include: Higher Education, Labor & Commerce, Health & HealthCare, and Trade & Commerce. He was also instrumental in helping resolve the budget crisis in the State of Illinois this year with bipartisan support. In addition to this significant accomplishment, he is a founding member of the Better Funding for Better Schools Coalition and has been recognized as “Legislator of the Year” by numerous associations. Also included will be Opening Remarks, an Overview of the Month’s events, and the beginning of the Student Essay Contest.

The Closing Day Event on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 1:00pm in the Library will be a “back by popular demand” Genealogy Workshop conducted by two members from the Afro-American Genealogical & Historical Society of Chicago: Ms. Angela McGhee and Mr. Paul Holmes. It will be followed by the announcement of the Essay Contest Winners with prizes awarded. Refreshments will be served.

Casting Call for Rapunzel at SSC

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The Children’s Theatre Company of South Suburban College announces open auditions for Michele L. Vacca’s “Rapunzel and the Frog Prince.” It’s a uniquely comical mashup that cleverly blends the two Grimm’s tales into one story. This isn’t your standard fairy tale!

The auditions will take place on September 28 and 29, 2017 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Readings will be held in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on the main campus at 15800 S. State Street in South Holland, IL.

Director Ellie Shunko of Lansing will cast 12 actors between the ages of 18 and 70 of all ages, colors and sizes. Being fairly physically fit, a willingness to try anything, a sense of fun and loads of energy are big bonuses.

Performances are scheduled for January 13 and 16-20, 2018 and will be held during the day for local grammar school aged children. Cast members are required to attend all dress rehearsals and performances.

Auditions are open to all community members as well as SSC students. Appointments and prepared audition materials are not necessary. Auditioners will read from scenes which will be available at the time of auditions. Copies of the script are on reserve in the SSC library. Everyone is welcome to attend both auditions. Be prepared to list all conflicts with the rehearsal schedule.

For character descriptions, rehearsal schedule and more information, visit the Kindig Performing Arts Center’s website at http://learn.ssc.edu/theatre/ or email ssctheatre@ssc.edu. Goodbye Spring, Hello Fall!

I hope the first couple weeks of the semester were amazing. I have noticed the vast amount of new faces and excitement in some students as they pass by one another to find their classrooms. It brings back memories of when I first started. Finding classes became a piece of cake after the second day. I hope everyone is buckled in and ready as new opportunities begin to emerge.

One thing that I realized, as I am finishing my journey here, is that I have yet to attend any sporting events. I have tons of great stories from many of the other activities that are held here, but none of being up by two with only a few seconds left in a game. I am disappointed that it took me this long to realize my love for this school and wanting to take part in cheering on fellow classmates, which is why I must share everything I can about SSC’s talented sports teams.

SSC is home to seven teams: men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and softball. The soccer teams have already begun their seasons and the first home match for volleyball is quickly approaching. To keep up to date with what teams are playing and when/where their games will be held, check here: http://www.ssc.edu/calendar/2017-09/ and make plans to attend. The cost for sporting events are as follows: adults $5, seniors and students $3, and children 10 and under are free. Just remember, students must bring their IDs to prove that they are actually enrolled at SSC for the discount! For any other information about SSC’s teams, please visit: http://www.ssc.edu/services/student-services/student-life/athletics/.

If you miss any of the action from the sporting events, don’t forget to watch Noah Nowicki as he gives us the highlights on “Home Game Heroes”. Here is a link with his previous recaps: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLACSRwWBQgt99AU4vSj64rdHTSUXaeids. If you are interested in getting involved with helping Noah on the “Home Game Heroes” crew, do not hesitate to e-mail 360@ssc.edu. There’s a women’s soccer game against the Trinity Christian College JV team at home (Bulldog Stadium at the south end of the main campus) this evening at 4 PM. Come out to support our Lady Bulldogs and converse with fellow classmates!

PAC Rats Spoof Hitchcock with “Wrong Window”

SOUTH HOLLAND – The PAC Rats Theatre Company of South Suburban College will present the comedy whodunit, “Wrong Window.” Performances will take place in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on the main campus on September 15 and 22, 2017 at 7:30pm and September 16, 23 and 24, 2017 at 2:00pm.

“Wrong Window” is the work of former television writers Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore (“The Wayans Brothers, “Suddenly Susan,” “Martin”). The pair has created several popular off-Broadway farces like “You’ve Got Hate Mail” and perhaps their best-known opus, “Love, Sex and the I.R.S.”

Loosely based on Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic movie, “Rear Window,” the play centers around estranged couple Jeff (Charlie Furtek of Lansing) and Marnie Elbies (Jennifer Crick of Homewood), who are getting back together after a brief separation.

Like the main characters in the Hitchcock’s movie, the Elbies enjoy spying on the neighbors who live in the apartment across the way. But that innocent fun quickly turns into pure chaos when the Elbies and their good friends, Robbie (Martell Jefferson of South Holland) and Midge Smith (Ashley Orendorff of Thornton), hear the neighbors, Lila (Heather Young of Chicago) and Thor Larswald (Robert Smagacz of Calumet City), fight and then see what they think is a murder.

Once Lila goes missing, the Elbies and Smiths play amateur sleuths and become involved in hilarious shenanigans to try to find out what really happened. Marnie and Midge swipe the master keys off of Loomis (Kevin Hathaway of Park Forest), the building’s handyman, while Jeff and Robbie are near suspects to the sharp-eyed Detective Doyle (Catherine Hundt of Thornton).

Just when you think you’ve guessed who did what, the show takes a completely different turn. With mistaken identities, extramarital affairs and a corpse popping up, two questions remain: Who killed Lila Larswald? And if she’s not dead then who is?

“Wrong Window” is directed by Homewood resident Pat Nevins. Set design is by Dean Scalzitti of Hegewisch. The costume designers are Joanna Tassin of Park Forest and Angela Martin of Midlothian. Sandra Wagner of Lansing is the stage manager. Jordan Swierczyna of Robbins is both the lighting and sound designer.

Tickets are just $8 for adults, $6 for seniors 55 or better, $6 for students. South Suburban College staff and students will enjoy a buy one, get one offer with an I.D. Call the 24/7 box office voicemail line at 708-210-5741. You may also reserve tickets by e-mail at boxoffice@ssc.edu. Group rates are also available.

South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294. Free, ample, well-lit parking is available.

Art Exhibition Coming to South Suburban College’s Thiel Gallery in September

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled Silent Witnesses by Carmen Chami. The exhibition will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery September 6 – October 11. On September 21, Ms. Chami will deliver an art historical lecture on traditional pictorial techniques popularized in the XVII century and their relationship to her artistic techniques at 12:15 in room 4340 with an artist reception to follow at 1:00.

Carmen Chami (Mexico City, 1974) graduated with a degree in Art Restoration. Her education specialized in the great Masters of the seventeenth century of New Spanish Baroque (Mexican Baroque) style and she was able to discover that it is a very particular way in which that they applied the color on the canvas with a precise order. The great masters she studied only used 8 pigments in most cases and the result was an art wonderfully rich in color and light. She translated all of this knowledge into her own pictorial language, with color being an invaluable resource and a powerful and dramatic expression. The artist stated, “I’m a Mexican artist living in Chicago since 2015 and am very fortunate that as a creative imaginative artist, I get to face to face every day with a limitless blank canvas”.

Chami’s paintings belong to important institutions such as the Mexican Presidency; Marines Secretary; National University of Mexico; Milenio Group and the National Death Museum. Chami is currently part of the National Creators System supported by the Mexican government, which obtained a grant for three years to develop the theme “Adlateres Migrantes” (Migrant Minions). Additional images and information are available at the artist’s website www.carmenchami.com

The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the fourth floor and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The galleries are supported in part by the SSC Foundation. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. For more information contact (708) 596-2000 ext. 2316. Artist Susan L. Moore Opens a Solo Exhibition “Light Rendering Space” in Photo Four Gallery of South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition titled “Light Rendering Space,” by artist Susan L. Moore in the Photo Four Gallery from August 23th through October 5. The Photo Four Gallery is located in Room 4338 on the 4th Floor of SSC’s Main Campus.

Susan L. Moore received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College in Chicago, a Masters in Art Education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and most recently, in 2003, she earned a Masters in Fine Art from Washington University, School of Art in St. Louis, Missouri. Currently, Moore is a Professor at Indiana University South Bend where she teaches photography and serves as Chair of the Fine Arts Department. Moore’s photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally in individual shows as well as juried exhibitions. Her recent landscape images were selected for exhibition at the South Bend Museum of Art and she has received grants from the Indiana Arts Commission to support her landscape photography projects

Moore stated, “The photographic process begins with a consideration of light and subject. In these minimalist images of empty places, the quality of light becomes the subject. The film emulsion renders a delicate pattern, commonly known as grain, from the subtle texture of these interior spaces. This, along with the visual qualities of tonality, composition, and space are indicative of the photographic process as a form of representation. The camera, by its very nature, mediates between the subject and the print. The abstraction exaggerates this distinction. In contemporary culture saturated with images, the camera becomes a powerful tool in forming an understanding of reality.”

SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge.

There was fun, excitement and a large dose of enthusiasm provided by college staff. The Open House, geared toward providing College information and pathways to successful careers, saw nearly 300 persons come through its doors seeking just that. Many participated in College tours and raffles for Visa Gift Cards, and other giveaways. WGCI and Tone Kapone were also on campus and rounded out the fun.

Program representatives from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), Manufacturing, Building and Construction, Paralegal Studies, Court Reporting, Allied Health, SSC Maker Lab, Graphic Arts, Nursing, Applied Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Job Training, the new Latino Center and many more were on hand to answer questions and guide potential students with program facts and requirements.

The Final Countdown

As summer marches on, the excitement of returning to or starting college begins. It’s never an easy transition, and trying to ignore the calendar and clock heightens anxiety. What else can one do? My advice is to get a head start on making sure that you are fully prepared. Books and supplies are the first things on my agenda. I try to purchase at least one notebook for each class. For example, I have decided to take Environmental Biology, which includes a lab. I’ve thought about purchasing a binder, one subject notebook, and loose leaf paper, but then figured why not get a two or three subject notebook to keep things a bit more organized and not so heavy to carry in my book bag. On a side note, do not let those amazing looking notebook covers lure you into a purchase. The paper quality and manufacture of them is usually poor, and you will be looking for another one before you even hit the middle of the school year.

Next thing is book purchasing. I’m sure many of us have taken the time to look at the book listing for the fall by now. If not, you can follow the link http://www.ssc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Fall2017_06292017.pdf and take note of book titles and how much they cost. The one thing I know we can all agree on are the prices. Whether it is out of pocket or financial aid, everyone dislikes watching the total appear at the register. One thing that I have tried my best to do is to put away money from paychecks so when this time rolls around, I can take the sku number and find a book renter online. I would suggest to purchase or rent as soon as you can. You will be able to get the cheapest prices and also not be in limbo a week after classes have begun. Many of the places I have used to rent books allow you to write or highlight in them. Being able to pay twenty dollars instead of one hundred and eighty is a life saver. There will be times when you need to purchase from the SSC bookstore, but not having to purchase them all and renting instead will help cut cost down.

The first days are going to be stressful and it might not be what you thought. That is why this first week of class is the most important and needs to be taken pretty seriously for everyone, no matter how you are paying. This week is the only time that one can drop a class and be issued a refund. That info is located here: http://www.ssc.edu/event/last-day-refund-period-1st-8-16-week-fall-2017-college-credit-classes/ . After the date that is listed in the link, one can only do a withdrawal without a refund. This info can be found here: http://www.ssc.edu/event/withdrawal-period-begins-fall-2017-8-week-16-week-classes/ .

If any of this sounds a bit confusing, that is okay. Students are more than welcome to make an appointment with a counselor to help guide in choices. They even help make plans for how students can pursue their college education. I would definitely encourage everyone to stop by and check in on where you are at for requirements in your degree. This link will take you straight to the counseling center page to guide you in the right direction: http://www.ssc.edu/services/student-services/counseling-center/ .

Not ready to accept the fact that all this should be done? I understand. There is still time to have one final vacation before you need to buckle down. Plan a staycation downtown, head to the beaches and take in the sun a few more times, or take that road trip that you’ve been dying to do. As the days are now at single digits until we return, I wish everyone a happy beginning or welcome back. I hope that everything goes well and that SSC offers you everything you’ve been looking for. Just remember that no matter how you feel about returning or starting here at South Suburban College, everything will be okay. YOU BELONG HERE.

I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

In case you forgot about my last post, I shared how I stay on track by using my SSC Portal, but there are also a lot of people in my life that help me stay focused.

For starters, I have to acknowledge my amazing family. We are always there for each other, and that is why a lot of decisions I make are always made with my family in mind. I may seem old fashioned, but I never want a wrong mistake to define my family. Like any family, we fight, bicker, laugh, cry, and sometimes push away from each other. In the end, we know that no matter what happens, we will always be there for one another. The one point I always keep in my mind are the words my mother tells me daily, “Don’t be so hard on yourself,” and “It will happen when the time is right.” I can honestly say that there is no place like home.

The next group is tricky to pin-point since I have had my share of excellent professors over the years. But as I returned to South Suburban College, I admired the dedication of two women and a gentleman who went above and beyond their calling as teachers.

Dr. Nancy Mulvihill – I still remember the very first day of Abnormal Psychology and how I didn’t want to speak. There was no reason behind this. I just don’t warm up to people that quickly. I began to pick up on her love of movies with each quote she used while teaching, and I knew, from that moment, I was going to enjoy being her student. As the weeks progressed, I began to confide in her, and once she found out about my hardships that year in school, she made them her own.

Another professor that I would like to thank is Bobbie Saltzman – the best drama teacher that I know. Within a year, I broke out of my shell and found the stage to be a new home. My voice became louder, and I was no longer afraid of speaking my mind. Tasks that I found impossible were no longer scary. Since then, I have found it easier to socialize in school. Bobbie already knows how much she means to me, but how she changed my life is far more than words can say.

I have had my share of wonderful encounters while I’ve been a student at SSC, but one area of the college has helped expand my knowledge a great deal. I would like to thank everyone in Communications Services. I started off wanting to be a Bulldog Bites host and became a student worker for them. It has been a whirlwind of excitement. Just from the interview, I knew this place was going to be a turning point for myself. From taking photos, attending events, and even writing this blog, I feel like I found a place where I belong, and the support everyone has shown pushes me to strive harder every day.

For me, I have changed a lot of the ways I handle situations in life, and I have this long-lasting advice from John Geraci, a communications professor, whose classes I have had the pleasure of taking. We recently spoke, and I shared how I failed a class of his in the past. He was taken back, but told me that if I were to take it again, there was not a doubt that I would pass. Just to have him tell me that we all make mistakes in life and to reassure me that I was a smart woman was comforting. I hadn’t seen him since 2008, and to somehow make an impression on him means that it had to have been positive (I hope!).

The main idea is to surround yourself with positivity and never tell yourself that you can’t. Everyone is capable of extraordinary things, and it takes time to conquer all the obstacles. I guess my mom was right. It does happen when the time is right.

SSC Foundation Elects New President, Readies for Tom Dreesen & Scholarship Drive

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) recently held its annual meeting at South Suburban College (SSC) in South Holland to review and close fiscal year (FY) 2017 and to elect new membership and officers for FY-18.

Two new representatives will be joining the SSCF Board of Directors: Helen Y. Gant-Farley, of Advocate Medical Group, and John A. Velez of BMO Harris Bank. Ms. Gant-Farley, is the Regional Director of Operations for the Advocate Medical Group, a position she has held since June 2015 when she moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania. With over 10 years of financial experience, Mr. Velez is the Bank Manager for BMO Harris Bank at the South Holland office. He joined BMO Harris Bank in 2010.

Additionally, the Foundation elected a new slate of officers including new President Tim Woloszyn, MB Financial Bank; Vice-President Susan Cox, First Midwest Bank; Treasurer John Kasperek, Jr., John Kasperek Co., Inc.; and Executive Committee members Patrick Rush, SSCF Executive Director; Robin James, Providence Bank; Cindy Doorn-Nylen, Docter’s Interior Landscaping; and Don Manning, SSC President.

“Thank you to the Board of Directors for your vote of confidence and your continued support of this important organization,” said Woloszyn. “I would also like to personally thank Cindy Doorn-Nylen for her incredible leadership during the past two years. I look forward to our continued growth to provide more opportunities to students at SSC.”

The SSCF also reviewed fundraising successes and scholarships awarded of the past year. Its two major fundraisers–the fall Scholarship Donor Drive and the spring Showcase Gala helped the Foundation to award over $100,000 in scholarships, with an additional $12,000 in special assistance directed to SSC students through the Carol Manning Student Assistance Fund and Rocky Clark Memorial Fund (for students with challenges).

“Thanks to our board of directors and countless supporters, the South Suburban College Foundation had a successful year fulfilling its mission to support student success,” said Pat Rush, Executive Director. “The coming year will be especially critical to SSC and we will aggressively pursue additional support beginning with our Tom Dreesen performance on September 23rd, our ongoing $90-for-90 capital campaign, and our fall scholarship drive.”

The SSC Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors composed of 22 of the south suburban area’s business, civic and community leaders. The SSCF has now awarded over $1,900,000 in scholarship awards since 1989.

Not Thrownin’ Away My Shot

I am going to share a few helpful tips on how to stay on track with your goals in the next two blog entries. I know that I am still young and have hardly experienced life to be giving advice, but I can communicate what I have found to be useful. I also hope that someone can take away a piece of my advice and use it for their own situations. By exploring the MySSC Portal, I was able to establish my safety net at South Suburban College.

By taking the time to actually look into my SSC portal, I found some very useful tools to help keep me on track. The ACADEMIC PLANNING section, which appears under the WebAdvisor Self-Service Menu, is one of the most important sections that I strongly urge everyone to take a look at! Making a list of my future classes has made each registration less complicated. In a strange way, I felt like I had something in order in my life for once.

The first tool I used was the PROGRAM EVALUATION, located under the ACADEMIC PLANNING section. It will lay out everything that you have taken and the classes you are currently enrolled in. This will also breakdown what areas have yet to be completed.

I made sure to print out a copy for my personal record, so I can keep track of what I need to register for the upcoming semesters. Just a heads up, if you previously failed a class, it will also let you know if it has any impact on your GPA. Let me just say that I had an upsetting wake-up call looking back at grades, so this has been an enormous reason on wanting to stay focused.

Now is the time to dive into the PLAN COURSES section! There is a total of eight clickable links, but the one I focus on is the Create/Add to Worksheet.

This is the area where you can build your own plan of what you will need to complete your degree, and how many credits each will be worth. Personally, I spent more than two hours researching classes and putting together a plan.

Another quick note, just because you create a plan, it does not mean that it is set in stone. You can modify your list of any or all courses until you are satisfied. I often find myself going back to make sure I still feel content with my choices. I am highly aware that a planned out worksheet of future classes does not guarantee that someone will remain on track. However, these are tiny steps I’ve taken to stay on my course. I am sure that everyone has their own plan, and I would love to hear about how you select classes. Don’t be afraid to stop me in the hallway and share your story!

“May your choices reflect you HOPES, not your fears.”

South Suburban College to Host Paralegal Open House at Oak Forest Campus

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College will be hosting an Open House for its Paralegal Program on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in Room 5190 at the Oak Forest Center.

Attendees will learn about an exciting career that is expected to grow 18% through 2020 according to the US Department of Labor. Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/Legal Assistant curriculum, including the Associate Degree and certificate programs. In addition, former students from the program, working as paralegals, will be present to answer questions.

The curriculum prepares students to work in a variety of legal environments including civil and criminal litigation, insurance, banking, public and governmental agencies, law offices and corporate legal departments. Emphasis is placed on the development of core skills in legal research and writing techniques including compilation and analysis of data, understanding legal vocabulary, law office technology, and preparation of legal documents.

“Whether you are looking for a change in your career path or looking to begin a career, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the law,” says Jason Cieslik, J.D., Coordinator for the Legal Studies Program.

SSC has the only American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program in the Chicago Southland region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workforce. The college also requires that all of the instructors in the program are lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction.

While the majority of the paralegal classes are offered at the Oak Forest Center (conveniently located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue), some classes are offered online and some are offered at the Main Campus in South Holland.

The Room Where It Happens

My previous post mentioned the driving forces that have helped me reach this point in my life, but I have yet to share what helps me each and every morning. I would like to share with everyone my vision mirror:

I was told by one of best friends, Sabrina Jones, that I should start my year off by creating a vision board of the things I would like to accomplish. I could only think of the basics, like eating better, staying fit, and take care of my health. After juggling with this idea of the board, it finally hit me. The main vision I have for myself was graduation. Of course, the other ideas followed behind, but my mind has been set on earning my degree for a long time.

The only issue now – I didn’t have enough ideas or photos to fill an entire poster board. The only magazines that ever came through the mail were Better Home, Seventeen, Momentum, Women’s Health and Elle. We still have no idea how Elle started arriving (insert spooky noises). And let’s be serious, I was not about to waste money purchasing magazines only to watch myself cut up my money. I also did not want to waste ink by printing, so flipping through magazines became my only choice. As I began to flip, I noticed myself more drawn to sayings, rather than pictures.

Carefully, I scanned each and every saying. I remember pulling out many pages, and after hours of cutting I had to take a break. I looked down at the pages and noticed that the pile beside me might be more than enough. I began to separate them after re-reading and only a select few made my final masterpiece. As I cut the words out and placed them around a mirror, I stared back at myself noticing that something was missing. A graduation cap! I had previously purchased a black poster board and decided to use it for the piece of resistance.

I wake up every morning and stand perfectly under the graduation cap. Even when things seem to be taking their toll on me, taking a break and standing right there brings a calming effect. I love that this non-traditional vision board was the missing piece of my puzzle. It has given me the hope needed to realize that one day, I will be wearing a blue SSC graduation cap instead of a paper black one.

Mother and Son Graduate Together at SSC High School Equivalency Ceremony

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Like all spring High School Equivalency graduations at South Suburban College, this year’s ceremony marked the culminating event of an amazing educational journey. Clad in the traditional light blue caps and gowns and marching to Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, the graduates were led in the procession by South Suburban College’s Board of Trustees and executive leadership. This year’s ceremony was unprecedented as two of those walking across the stage to receive their diplomas were mother and son, Silvia Huizar Navarro and Gillermo Herrara.

This mother and son duo provided each other with the perfect recipe of love and support to ensure each successfully completed High School Equivalency classes at South Suburban College. “My husband and I have worked together to give our children a better life,” says Huizar. “I wanted to get my General Education Diploma (GED) to teach my children that they have to continue studying if they want to have a better life.” It was amazing walking across the stage with my son,” adds Huizar. “It was an incredible experience.”

Herrera echoed those sentiments. “It felt a little weird sharing the stage with my mom, but the experience has provided inspiration to keep doing what I love to do. I’m more than proud of my mother for graduating, and others were proud of both of us.” What Herrera loves to do is work with computers and hopes to continue his education by enrolling in computer hardware and engineering courses at South Suburban College. His plan is to eventually transfer to a four-year university. “In ten years, I see myself owning my own computer company while also doing something computer-related in the entertainment industry,” explains Herrera.

Mom feels her journey is just beginning, as well. Huizar Navarro, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, admits that her biggest obstacle to success was the lack of formal education in her country and the language barrier as a student in the United States. I had to split my time between caring for my children, working on weekends, and studying in my free time.” Passing the English portion of the GED test was the first hurdle that Huizar Navarro overcame. Like her son, Huizar Navarro sees obtaining her GED diploma as the beginning of her educational journey. “My dream now is to become a registered nurse in a hospital. I’m already studying to become a Nursing Assistant,” says Huizar Navarro proudly.

Both Herrara and Huizar Navarro credit SSC’s supportive Adult Education Department for their academic success. Navarro describes her months at SSC as “incredible and interesting,” while Herrera says it was a “great experience meeting new people and having a supportive teacher.”

Seeing the admiration and love each has for the other, there’s no doubt that the personal support system they’ve developed over the past few months will continue to inspire them to attain their future respective goals. Huizar Navarro went on to state, “I hope the adult education program at SSC lasts for generations for people who did not finish their studies. It’s very rewarding when you finish.” Perhaps another Mother/Son walk across the SSC Performing Arts Center stage is in the future for this determined duo!

SSC will have its next registration for High School Equivalency and English Language Acquisition classes September 11, 12, and 13. These classes are free for all Illinois residents. Aleut Community Turns to South Suburban College Professor Bruce Allardice

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – When the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government wanted to document their tribe’s history, they turned to SSC professor Bruce Allardice. As part of the Tribal Government’s efforts to reclaim their heritage, the tribe set out to document the history of the baseball field on which tribal members had played baseball since (they thought) the early 1900s. Dylan Conduzzi, Aleut Community of St. Paul Tribal Government employee, contacted Professor Allardice, who conducts research on early baseball history for the Society of American Baseball Research and for Major League Baseball.

Prof. Allardice discovered articles in a little-known Connecticut newspaper which proved that Americans who used St. Paul Island had formed a baseball team from among the island natives in June of 1868—far earlier than anyone in the Aleut community had ever known! This is the first known instance of baseball playing in the state of Alaska, which had only become part of the U.S. the year prior. Prof. Allardice also tracked down the biographies of the team’s organizers.

The Aleut Community of St. Paul Tribal Government is honored to announce plans to commemorate the 150-year anniversary of the founding of the baseball club of St. Paul Island. To commemorate the long and rich history of baseball on St. Paul Island, the Tribal Government will be planning a series of events and programs dedicated to the history of the club and will honor the long and rich history of baseball for the St. Paul community.

Professor Allardice’s research can be found on the website, www.protoball.org. He’s entered almost 4,500 early (pre-1870) baseball clubs in the U.S. and 121 foreign countries. Baseball historian Larry McCray adds: “Bruce’s ability to dig up the earliest games and clubs constantly amazes us.”

South Suburban College Class Holds 89th Commencement Ceremony

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College hosted its 89th Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 21, 2017 in the SSC Fitness Center/Fieldhouse on the Main Campus located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

This year’s Commencement Speaker was SSC alumnus Jarrett M. Adams, Attorney, Innocence Project, NY. After serving nearly 10 years for a wrongful conviction, Jarrett was exonerated with the assistance of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. As a first step, Jarrett literally walked back into college from his mother’s house in South Holland and earned his Associates Degree from SSC in 2009. From scholarship to passing the New York bar exam on his first attempt in 2016, Jarrett has used the injustice he endured as inspiration to become an advocate for the underserved and uncounted.

This year South Suburban College awarded over 550 degrees and certificates to graduating students, in addition to many more transferring students who are finishing up their two years at SSC. Approximately 225 students walked at the ceremony.

Among this year’s graduates was LaWanda Flennoy, one of three generations of family celebrating their graduations together. Flennoy’s two oldest daughters, Paris and Amari, graduated from college this month. Her youngest, Jade, finished high school, and granddaughter Brooklyn graduated from kindergarten.

Registration for the fall semester at SSC is now in progress. For more information about all of SSC’s programs, admissions and registration, please visit www.ssc.edu or contact the Admissions Office at (708) 210-5718.

South Suburban College Literacy Tutor Wins Illinois State Library “Spotlight on Achievement” Award

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Each year, the Illinois State Library recognizes the achievements of ten individuals who support the adult literacy effort in Illinois. The Spotlight on Achievement Awards go to five inspiring adult learners who have shown tremendous growth as they worked to improve their reading skills or to learn the English language, and are also presented to five adult literacy volunteer tutors who have shown great dedication as they assisted adult learners to reach their reading goals.

This year Gerald Chaben, South Suburban College literacy tutor, received one of these prestigious awards in a ceremony held May 8th at the Springfield State Library. Mr. Chaben was given a plaque, the Illinois Blue Book personally signed by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, and three other books. The award was accepted on Mr. Chaben’s behalf by Raylynn Stokes, Literacy Coach of South Suburban College’s Adult Volunteer Literacy Program.

Tutoring for South Suburban College fifteen years and counting, Mr. Chaben has volunteered countless hours of instructional time with his adult learners. He believes that adult literacy is a vital component of society and feels that people with good literacy skills are more likely to have higher self-esteem, better health, better jobs and higher wages. Chaben is active in helping his students feel more confident in learning and bettering themselves, and always asks his learners what they need help with that day, whether it be class work or life skills. Gerald worked with one student for ten years, eventually raising her reading ability by five levels. This is one of the many examples of the dedication Gerald Chaben has for his students.

If you would like to register for a volunteer tutor training class, or if you know someone who could benefit from tutoring services, please contact Raylynn Stokes, South Suburban College Literacy Coach of the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email rstokes@ssc.edu. South Suburban College Seeks Memorabilia Donations for Historic Display

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of South Suburban College (1927-2017), we are creating a college historic wall and display case for the main campus atrium that will commemorate our school from its beginnings as Thornton Community College in the 1920s to the institution we know today.

All donations will become the property of South Suburban College. Due to space limitations, we cannot accept all articles.

If you have a college-related item from Thornton Junior College, Thornton Community College or South Suburban College that you would be willing to donate for our display case, please email Debbie Lamoureux at dlamoureux@ssc.edu. If available, please attach a photo. Or phone (708) 596-2000, ext. 2203. Thank you for your help with this project. South Suburban College Recognizes High School Students at 10th Annual Video Competition

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College (SSC), with the assistance of Career Development Systems (CDS), hosted the 10th Annual South Suburban College Video Competition on Thursday, April 20, 2017, in the Kindig Performing Arts Center. The competition showcases talent from high schools as well as provides students with tours of the college’s facilities, including the television studio, audio studio and multimedia lab.

“It’s important for my students to tour South Suburban College because they just don’t realize how amazing facilities are so close to home,” said Eisenhower High School teacher, Jodi Pelini. Michael Jones, parent of Bremen High School senior/competition participant, Brittany Jones, felt it was beneficial for South Suburban College to host a video competition for high schoolers because students get familiar with SSC’s options. He was impressed with the variety of videos he saw at the event. Brittany and some of her classmates placed 3rd in the PSA and Music Video categories.

Ten high schools submitted entries to the competition including Bremen, Eisenhower, Hillcrest, Oak Forest, Richards, Shepard, Southland Prep, Thornridge, Thornton Township and Tinley Park. Students entered work in eight different categories: Commercial, PSA, Short Subject, Music Video, Live Multi-Camera Program, Creative Editing, News Story or Feature and News Program. The 69 entries were judged on aesthetic quality, technical quality, program design and overall effectiveness.

Angie Zavala, a senior at Eisenhower High School, took home two 1st place trophies and three 2nd place ribbons. When Zavala graduates, she plans to continue her education and has a goal of entering the film industry as a director. Zavala was ecstatic to see how many awards she won and said, “I enjoyed looking at my peers’ video submissions during the award ceremony the most.” Her partner on the music video submission that took 1st place was junior Brianna Smith. She wants to create a book series and adapt those books into film. Smith enjoyed watching video clips of nominees on the big screen to see how she can improve her submissions for next year’s competition.

In addition to the student awards, high schools competed for the Regional Award of Distinction. Eisenhower High School won this year’s award having the highest average score per entry. “I love the way the awards are announced,” said Pelini. “This competition allows students to take pride in their work and get recognized for hard work.”

The student awards for each category are as follows:

Commercial: First Place, “Cardinal AdBlock” – Eisenhower; Second Place, “Cardinal Football: Are You Ready?” – Eisenhower; Third Place, “Betrayer” – Bremen.

Mark Your Legacy at South Suburban College By Supporting Its “90 for 90” Capital Campaign

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – In light of the State of Illinois’ financial issues, budget impasses and their direct impact on South Suburban College (SSC), the SSC Foundation is seeking $90 gifts from those who wish to help make a difference for students on campus.

This charitable activity is the college’s first capital campaign in decades in order to make a key facility project finally become a reality—a student assistance center named SSC Circle. SSC Circle would provide significant, much needed immediate support for student assistance with enrollment and registration processing, and much more. The campaign is titled “90 for 90” and is targeting $90 one-time donations throughout SSC’s current 90th anniversary year with a goal to raise $90,000. Once the goal is achieved, the college will provide matching funds to complete the project. All donors will have their names recognized on a donor wall within SSC Circle.

“The 90 for 90 campaign is an opportunity for everyone to help – our faculty and staff, retirees, alumni, community partners and local residents – to support SSC in our greatest time of need,” said Don Manning, SSC president. “Individuals can take great pride in providing an affordable, charitable gift, while earning a tax-deduction and permanent recognition on the SSC Circle donor wall.”

All contributions to the SSCF are 100% tax-deductible (TIN: 23-7191738). The SSCF staff works cooperatively with individuals and organizations to develop a donor plan of any level, with the larger the donation the larger the recognition. Donations may be made online from www.ssc.edu/foundation

Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

Tutors will receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

If you would like to register for the upcoming volunteer tutor training class please register, or if you know someone who could benefit from tutoring services, please contact Raylynn Stokes, Literacy Coach of the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email rstokes@ssc.edu. SSC Court Reporting Student Wins 1st Place in NCRA Contest

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – In honor of 2017 Court Reporting & Captioning Week, the National Court Reporting Association’s (NCRA) Student Committee challenged court reporting students to transcribe as many tests as possible during the week to qualify for a prize. First place was awarded to Angela Patla, a student at South Suburban College, Oak Forest, IL. Robyn Broyles a student at GateWay Community College, Phoenix, Ariz., earned second place, and Evie Morris, a student at the Court Reporting Institute of St. Louis, Mo., earned third place.

Under the contest’s rules, participants did not have to pass the tests, simply transcribe them. The first place winner Patla will be awarded a copy of NCRA’s RPR Study Guide, Broyles will have one leg of the RPR Skills Test covered, and Morris will receive a $25 Starbucks gift card.

Students who participated in the challenge were also required to submit a test verification form signed by both the student and a teacher.

“When I heard of the contest, I was debating on whether or not I should go for it. Winning the RPR Study Guide book was definitely something that pushed me in doing the contest,” said Patla, who won top honors by transcribing 31 tests during the competition.

“Although court reporting and transcribing came fairly easy to me since I started the program, I think participating in this contest helped a lot with my transcribing skills. It gave me a chance to feel what it was like to have a deadline on something like I would if I was on a job out reporting.”

Patla, who is almost through with 190 Testimony, is done with Jury Charge and is working on her 180 Literary. She plans to either freelance or work as an official court reporter when she graduates. She attributes her choice of court reporting as a career to her mother.

“My mom actually helped me choose court reporting my junior year of high school. I had no idea what I wanted to do. She mentioned to me a few different ladies in the area that we know who are court reporters. Right away I was interested, and I went to South Suburban’s open house. I couldn’t wait to graduate school and get started with the program,” said Patla.

For more information on the Court Reporting Program, contact LaTherese Cooke at (708) 596-2000, ext. 3217 or email lcooke@ssc.edu. For more information about all of SSC’s programs, admissions and registration, please visit www.ssc.edu or contact the Admissions Office at (708) 210-5718.

Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Adult Education Department administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE/GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

For more information about Family Reading Night or the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, please contact Raylynn Stokes, coordinator, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email rstokes@ssc.edu.   South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, Illinois. This event is sponsored by the SSC Foundation.

Show Me The Money…Please?

Every year, South Suburban College offers an abundance of scholarships. These scholarships come with certain guidelines to apply, but there are many to choose from and one could be waiting for you. Unsure of how to get started? Not an issue! This post will help you get started or hopefully encourage you to apply. There are a total of five steps.
Step one is extremely simple. Find the scholarship booklet around campus. It looks like this:

Or you can click on this link to take a look at the scholarships online: http://www.ssc.edu/admissions-registration/scholarships/.
Underneath each scholarship, there are requirements needed to apply, so make sure to read carefully. It may also help to speak with a counselor if you are second guessing your eligibility. It never hurts to apply, even if you do not fully meet all of the credentials. You might end up surprising yourself. Here is an example of some of the scholarships and requirements:

After you have your list of scholarships together, the next step (I suggest) would be to speak with an SSC faculty member that knows you well enough to give you a letter of recommendation. This is why it is important to form a bond with professors while you’re here. They go beyond the call of just being your instructor, and many will be happy that you asked for their help.

Having fun yet? Next, get your thinking cap on. It is time to write your personal essay stating how the scholarship(s) will benefit you. Spend some time on this part. Make sure to mention your chosen career path so they get a better understanding of your direction. Another pointer: Triple check your grammar, along with punctuation before printing. You do not want to come off uneducated, so try having a family member or friend proofread your work, if possible. You’ll be amazed at how much team work can help you out. One last note, your statement is only 250 words or less, so don’t panic.
How are you feeling? Excited? Tired? It’s understandable, but you are so close to the finish line. Time to take a look at the actual application form. You can view it here and/or print it here: http://www.ssc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/StudentScholarshipApp2017.pdf. This is what it should look like:

Take your time filling each section out carefully so there will be no need for white out. Now, before placing everything together, there is one more important detail. You need to print out a current transcript of your grades. Those can be located in the SSC portal under academic profile.

Deep breath. Inhale and exhale slowly. You’re finished! I would paperclip all of the material together, rather than staple. It might make it easier for the individuals reading your submission. You can turn in your completed forms to the Foundation Office (Room 2134) or the Financial Aid Office (Room 2355). But remember, the deadline is closing in (March 31st) so don’t wait!

South Suburban College ESL Class Helps the Homeless

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College’s English as a Second Language (ESL) class once again participated in a “Mats for the Homeless” Workshop Service Learning project.

The mats are created with plastic bags from the SSC Recycling Center. The students cut the bags into strips and make plastic yarn or “plarn.” They use the plarn to crochet mats for the homeless as a waterproof barrier. Millicent Collier, Service Learning Coordinator, said it takes between 600-700 plastic bags to make one mat. It is very labor intensive, and the ESL class has been a big help in this process. The students benefit from the workshop because it’s different than their normal classroom setting, and it provides a safe place for them to practice communication while helping the community at the same time. All students receive service learning credits in the process. Ms. Collier also noted that a lot of SSC instructors whose classes participate in these workshops see value in this Service Learning project because it helps our students develop stronger soft skills while serving the community and creates awareness of community needs.

Adult Education Instructor Camille Johnson said, “It’s important that our students understand that it’s the responsibility of each of us to give something back. I’m so proud that our students are willing to sacrifice a few hours of math and science to help others less fortunate.”

English as a Second Language (ESL) allows non-native students to improve their English skills from beginning to advanced levels. South Suburban College’s Adult Education Department offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to build the basic skills required for success. For enrollment and class information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2385 or ext. 2240, or visit www.ssc.edu under “Adult and Continuing Education, Adult Education.”

You can participate too! Recycle your plastic bags at SSC’s Recycling Center just outside the Bookstore OR attend a workshop on campus and receive Service Learning credits. For more information about Service Learning at SSC go to http://www.ssc.edu/academics/service-learning.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

As we enter into March, my mind quickly goes into how I made it to the halfway mark of the college semester. Just like many others, I am trying to pull together everything I have learned so far into one nice package for midterms. Nothing else seems to matter at this point, which is why I was unaware that this month should hold an important meaning for many women in the world. March is considered to be Women’s History Month! To help educate students in this area, Student Life is holding a contest to see if we can name thirty-seven famous women in history by looking at their picture. Of course, I can name the ones I have learned about through school and those who I’ve watched on television. But, my eyes stare blankly at the last twenty-three slots I have left to fill. My mind assures me that I have seen these faces before, but I can’t seem to recall when.

Day two of working on the Famous Women Contest, and it looks like I heard about many of them, but have not seen their pictures in years. I have learned though that many of these women are hardly brought up anymore. Of course, we hear about Hillary Clinton because of politics and of Rhianna since music is universal, but when is the last time someone spoke about Wilma Rudolph becoming the fastest woman in the 1960s after completing the 100 and 200 meter dash? Or the last time anyone has read the works of Maya Angelou? No, I am not pondering these questions just to stall time searching for these answers. I honestly think our history of women is dying and we should really consider sitting down and talking with our youth about how powerful they were and still are.

Final day with trying to figure out these last twelve and even if I do not win this contest, I can truly say that I have learned or re-learned about women in history. I have even found myself questioning why certain women were not included and then realized that, if they were, the contest would never end. This one is indeed very tricky but rewarding for everyone, and I highly recommend students to take a trip to the Student Life and Leadership Office and grab a copy. The contest will be running until Thursday, March 30th, and three lucky winners will win a thirty dollar bookstore gift certificate. Just make sure to identify thirty or more of the women in history correctly. To anyone who has completed this form, I salute you.

Women Empower One Another

This Friday, South Suburban College will be hosting the Chicago Women’s Conference presented by the Business & Career Institute. The event will open with a powerful keynote speaker. Caprice O’Bryant will share her amazing story and introduce you to Excuse Free Fitness, Inc. Her business is helping not only women, but men as well. I would love to share everything I have learned about her, but it may take away her thunder. Her presentation is something I recommend no one miss and make sure to bring tissue. Her experiences will move you and make you see that anything is possible.

There will also be speakers for health and wellness at the event. Not only will they address healthy eating habits and trying to live stress free, Dawn Avery (also known as Dawn the Dancin Deeva) will bring us the beauty of line dancing. No experience is needed and it’s a great cardio workout, all while letting the music move your body! I’ve always wanted to join a dance workout class. If you feel the same this may be your chance!

Not only will entrepreneurs like, speaker Stephanie Walters of Blue Top Marketing, Inc. share their stories about how to build a business from scratch, but they will also give advice along with excellent tips on how to motivate yourself. I never thought about starting my own business, but having the knowledge of it wouldn’t hurt.

The exhibitions I find to be right up everyone’s alley is the personal empowerment speakers. Women are extremely powerful, but sometimes life does take its toll and we become hard on ourselves. Each of the speakers will be addressing many issues of life and giving participants a chance to freely express what is going on in their lives.

I think this convention will give attendees a new outlook on life after interacting with everyone. I hope attendees share all the knowledge they collect from speakers with one another as well as others in their lives. For a detailed listing of speakers and a schedule of events, please visit http://thechicagowomensconference.org/. This will also be helpful when planning your day accordingly so you will not miss out on the activities. Hopefully you’re able to make some new connections at this event!

“Recent Drawings” Art Exhibition by Gregg Hertzlieb on Display at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present a new exhibition located in the Dulgar Gallery on SSC’s Main Campus in South Holland. An exhibition of art works by Gregg Hertzlieb titled “Recent Drawings” is on display March 6 to April 21, 2017. There will be an afternoon reception for the artist on March 27th at 12:30 p.m.

Gregg Hertzlieb is the director/curator of the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. He has a master’s degree in fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. An exhibiting artist working primarily in watercolor and pen and ink, Hertzlieb has shown his art in numerous exhibitions. His work is in both public and private collections.

Hertzlieb is the editor of numerous books, including The Calumet Region: An American Place (2009) and Domestic Vision: Twenty-Five Years of the Art of Joel Sheesley (2008), as well as a contributor to the books The Art of George Ames Aldrich (2013), The Indiana Dunes Revealed: The Art of Frank V. Dudley (2006) and American Railroad China: Image and Experience (2008). In addition to performing his duties at the museum, Hertzlieb teaches Museum Studies, Managing Facilities, and Printmaking; serves as art editor for Valparaiso University’s journal The Cresset; and contributes essays on Brauer collection objects to the Valparaiso Poetry Review. Hertzlieb is a native of Northwest Indiana and lives in LaPorte.

Hertzlieb describes his work as, “I hope to tell a story in my pictures, and the story is basically an extended investigation of who I am and what I discover in the landscape of both my imagination and the region I call home. In a sense, I wish my works to function like a message in a bottle, where through the drawings I reach across time and space to communicate to the viewer the way I felt, the things I was thinking about, as I created the picture.”

The public is welcome to visit the art exhibition and reception at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is on the first floor. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. Chicago Women’s Conference Star Award Winners Inspire Women to Excel

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Encouraging and supporting women is what The Chicago Women’s Conference is all about. Art Exhibition Coming to South Suburban College’s Thiel Gallery in March

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled Salt of the Earth by Margie Glass Sula. The exhibition will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery March 6 – March 28th with an artist reception on March 7th from noon-1:30.

Margie Glass Sula creates artworks that reintroduce the curious world of nature through her visual interpretation of simple forms, and exploration of art making materials. Her works range from drawing, painting, to abstract sculptures, which often change venues from indoor to outdoor. Glass Sula’s works all convey the same strange, quiet, and intriguing world that often lurks in nature that we fail to see, and have led to her becoming an award-winning visual artist; exhibiting work at the national level, along with landing works in public, as well as numerous private collections. Currently, she is an Adjunct Professor of Fine Art at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, IL, a WSSC Artist in Batavia, IL, a Juried artist showing works at Tall Grass Arts Association, Park Forest, IL, and member of the National Women’s Caucus for Art, who have published her works in numerous exhibition catalogues. To view a gallery of her work, please visit margieglasssula.com.

History Lesson

Hey guys!  It’s Black History month. The first event that I had pleasure in participating in was the African American History Contest: African American Firsts. From questions asking about the first African American writer down to the first African American president, I had gained an extreme amount of knowledge. The contest is still open until February 28, 2017, and if you need an incentive to take part, there will be three names drawn to win a thirty dollar voucher for the South Suburban College bookstore.

Last week I was also able to attend the Poetry Slam and Open Mic w/ Jus Words. This was unlike any other event that I have been to. From personal pieces from those who came up to the mic and even a few poems that our generation has never heard of, the works of art shared were moving. The best part, besides having received a free t-shirt, was watching the energy of everyone who walked on stage. Even though the audience’s participation wasn’t fully there, this first-time event needs to continue. And to those first timers who were brave enough to take the stage and share, I applaud you. Maybe next time I’ll have the guts to read something of mine.

To top off my recent involvements with Black History month here at South Suburban College I attended the Black History 101 for Everyone with Art Burton. Burton was a former professor here and he had a lot of information to give. There were a few things I did find interesting but of course the one I am most excited to share has to do with music. For starters, I was amazed at how each style of music literally came from African American culture! It does not matter what type you prefer, without this culture many forms would not be around today. I also was unaware that Jazz is considered to African Americans as their form of classical music! SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Each year the South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) has an annual spring gala from which all proceeds benefit scholarship programs. The SSCF is now seeking support from local residents, friends and partners for Showcase 2017: Change a Life–Change a Community, celebrating SSC’s 90-year legacy. This year’s event will be held on April 7, 2017, at Odyssey Country Club. The gala begins at 6:30 p.m. and features an open bar and premier buffet dinner, silent auction, dancing, and the outstanding music of Rhonda High Browne & Pieces.

With the cost of higher education on the rise and the level of state funding on the decline, students are finding it more and more difficult to afford a full-time college education. The SSC Foundation’s support is often critical for students to begin or continue their college education. Individuals and local businesses can support this mission while marketing themselves to approximately 300 guests through tax-deductible sponsorships and auction gifts. Tickets are also available for $125 each.

Donations for this cause are fully tax deductible. Registrations and sponsorships can be made online from www.ssc.edu/foundation. The Foundation Staff will pick up donations for auction. For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2463 or email foundation@ssc.edu.

The SSC Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors composed of 27 of the south suburban area’s finest business, civic and community leaders. The SSCF has now awarded over $1.8 million in scholarships since 1989. In 2016, over $100,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to SSC students.

In addition to an exciting Keynote from Ms. O’Bryant, this year’s event will again include networking, shopping, and will present over 15 speakers on topics including Personal Empowerment, Health & Wellness, and Business & Finance, along with a “We Can” panel that will feature a poignant discussion with powerful women who rose to the challenge and are making profound differences in their communities.

The Future is Now

My name is Jacqueline, and I am a student here at South Suburban College. I began attending in 2007, but in spring of 2010 I needed time to reevaluate what I truly wanted in my life. During this time, my mind would constantly remind me how I should have decided my future already, and I found myself thinking “do I really need to be in college?” The spring of 2015 was the year that would start the transformation I was in need of. My older sister, now a graduate of SSC, told me that I needed to stop being childish and get back out there, even if it was for just one class.

Since returning, I have been working toward my associate’s degree in Psychology, and the rest is falling into place. The dedication and hard work I have been putting forward was the last ingredient I was missing. Let it be known, it is always better late than never. I owe my recent success to her, and if she does happen to be reading this, thank you for the push and your continued support.

In the upcoming weeks, I am looking forward to sharing my journey here at South Suburban College with readers. From why I decided to start here, right down to the opportunities I have. This blog will hopefully give insight to events or even answer small questions that have been on your mind too. Hope you enjoyed it, and maybe you will see me around campus.

South Suburban College Seeks Star Awards Nominations

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – SSC will be holding its 9th Annual Chicago Women’s Conference on Friday, March 17. This will be our second year of presenting the STAR AWARDS and we are seeking nominations. The Star Awards recognize the accomplishments of fabulous women and encourage other women to also be STARS. The application deadline is on or before Friday, February 10.

There are two different categories:

The first is a very special STAR award that will be presented to an outstanding South Suburban College (Thornton Junior College) alumna. This award recognizes the achievements of a South Suburban College female graduate (whether from the past or recent) for her achievements in her profession/career, volunteerism or other outstanding life achievement. Through recognition of her accomplishments, we hope to motivate current and future women to also graduate and achieve! Last year the winner of this award was Joan Dorman, R.N., M.S.

The second award will recognize women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in business, community and/or education. These women are leaders in promoting and supporting health and wellness or personal and professional development. In the nominator’s eyes, the “STAR” is a role model because she is achieving her goals and through her inspiring actions has profoundly motivated others to do the same.

We need your nominations on or before Friday, February 10. The link for the form is http://thechicagowomensconference.org/star-awards/. Feel free to share the link and deadline with others. Please submit your nomination through the website. If you have any questions, contact Nancy Burrows at nburrows@ssc.edu.

Beauty Tames the Beast at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The Children’s Theatre Company of South Suburban College is celebrating its 30-year anniversary with Michele L. Vacca’s enchanting and warmly amusing dramatization of the beloved tale Beauty and the Beast. Performances will take place on Saturdays, January 14 and 21, 2017 at 11:00am and 2:00pm.

Florabunda, the Enchantress (Sandy Wagner of Lansing), begins the play by gathering a troupe of players about her, and assigning them roles. Belinda, the heroine (Catherine Hundt of Thornton), is a young woman of strong opinions, education and talent. Belinda’s father Henry Beaumont (Pat Nevins of Homewood), is the prosperous merchant.

In an effort to gain money for festivals and a new swimming pond, arrogant Prince Philip (Rykeil Knights of Riverdale) seizes all of Beaumonts’ property and they are forced to declare bankruptcy. To teach him a lesson, Florabunda works her magic and turns Philip into a hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return.

One day, Henry mistakenly wanders into the garden of the legendary Beast (Eric Atkinson of Chicago). The angry Beast reluctantly promises to spare Henry’s life, but only if Belinda agrees to live in his castle. Despite Henry’s objections, Belinda insists upon doing as the Beast requests. With the help of his servants (Juniper DeYoung of Thornton, Angela Martin of Midlothian and Heather Young of Chicago), Belinda begins to draw the cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation. Gradually, they become friends and inseparable companions.

Lansing resident Ellie Shunko is the director and producer. “We created the Children’s Theatre Company in 1986 to fill a need for affordable, live theatre for young audiences,” she said. “We perform for local grammar school and child care groups during school hours and for the general public on weekends. Our school performances are completely sold out.” Even after thirty years, Shunko has no plans of slowing down. “We are providing a valuable service for our community here at SSC,” she says. “And I still love watching the kids watch the shows.”

Adding their talents to the production lighting are designer Jon Jenkins from Chicago, costume designer Joanna Tassin from Park Forest, set designer Dean Scalzitti from Chicago and choreographer Lynzi Scholz from South Chicago Heights. June Wagner, from Lansing, is the stage manager.

South Suburban College is located at 15800 State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294 and is also accessible by PACE. Free, ample, well-lit parking is available. Reservations are suggested.
