Change a life – change a community.

With your assistance and the help of so many generous donors, the SSC Foundation fulfilled our mission last year by granting hundreds of scholarships to very deserving students by way of the Rocky Clark Memorial Scholarship, the Carol Manning Student Assistance Fund, COVID-19 Student Impact Fund and all of our general scholarships. This year has been full of challenges, but it has also given way for new opportunities to serve our students and has further demonstrated the great need that exists at SSC. As we prepare for our Fall Annual Fund Drive, we thank you for your past support and hope we can count on you again in FY23. We also hope many other colleagues will consider supporting our efforts for the first time.

Our newest initiative is our Capital Campaign Fund. We are pleased to inform you that South Suburban College was awarded a $51 million capital improvement grant through the State of Illinois’ 2019 capital bill to build a 130,000 square foot, three-story Allied Health & Nursing Center (AHNC) to train students as healthcare professionals. However, the total projected cost of this Center is expected to be approximately $71 million. As part of an agreement with the State of Illinois, South Suburban College needs to provide approximately $20 million for the remaining capital, technology and programmatic needs. This has prohibited our ability to move the historic project forward, to date. AHNC gifts may be made for up to a four-year period, garnering appropriate recognition for various levels of giving throughout the Center. (We can discuss the specifics in more detail with you individually.) The Foundation General Scholarship Fund will supplement scholarship awards for individuals and funds who choose to shift their annual scholarship gifts to the AHNC Campaign for the duration of the gift terms.

With your help, the SSCF has now issued over $2.6 million in scholarship awards to date, and has already raised over $1.2 million in AHNC campaign commitments. But we are now calling on YOU to help us get closer to our $2.2 million dollar goal and bring the campaign public! Please consider making your charitable gifts online. We also accept checks payable to “SSC Foundation.” A most sincere THANK YOU for the past support and continued consideration–your donations truly make a big difference!

With appreciation,

South Suburban College Foundation

Board of Directors

In 1973 the South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) was originally granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS as the “Student Aid Foundation of Thornton Community College.” As as a public charity described in IRC Sections 509(a)(2), donations are entirely tax-deductible (EIN: 237191738).

Today, the SSCF is led by a robust, engaging board of directors with a Mission to support the educational purposes and objectives of the College by providing assistance in the promotion of SSC services and facilities, with a primary focus on student scholarships. We work cooperatively with individuals and organizations in developing a customized giving plan to meet the needs and desires of the donors.

The SSCF began recording scholarship awards in 1989 and we have since handed out nearly three million dollars in total awards to SSC students. We have further assisted students with special programs, services and technology improvements totaling over an additional one million dollars. The SSCF seeks support through an Annual Scholarship Donor Drive, capital campaigns and fundraising events. With the cost of higher education on the rise and state funding on the decline, students are finding it more difficult to afford a full-time college education. At SSC, 90% of our students fall under the low income, first-generation, disabled or low income and disabled criteria. Your donation significantly helps these students and is an investment in the future economic development of the south suburban region.
