South Suburban College Foundation Seeks Support For Scholarship Fundraiser Gala

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Each year the South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) hosts a spring gala from which proceeds benefit critical scholarship opportunities. The SSCF is now seeking support from local residents, alumni and community partners for Showcase 2019: Blueprints for a Future Workforce on April 12, 2019, at Odyssey Country Club. This year’s event will both highlight, and in part support, Manufacturing & Technical Education programs at SSC.

The annual gala evening event begins at 6:30 p.m. and features an open bar and premier buffet dinner, silent auction, dancing, and the outstanding music of Rhonda High Browne & Pieces. Individuals and local businesses can support this mission while marketing themselves to approximately 300 guests through several tax-deductible sponsorship levels and auction gifts. Tickets are also available for $125 each.

With the cost of higher education on the rise and the level of state funding on the decline, students are finding it more and more difficult to afford a full-time college education. The SSC Foundation’s support is often critical for students to begin or continue their college education. Donations for this cause are fully tax deductible.

Registrations, auction donations and sponsorships can all be made online from sscf.givesmart.com. (Foundation Staff will pick up donations for auction.) For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2463 or email foundation@ssc.edu.

The SSC Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors composed of 25 of the south suburban area’s generous business, civic and community leaders. The SSCF has now awarded over $2 million in scholarships since 1989. In 2018, over $125,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to SSC students.

ICCTA Presents Service Award to South Suburban College Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Executive Director of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) Mike Monaghan made a special trip Thursday evening to the Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of South Suburban College to acknowledge and present the ICCTA Service Award to Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli.

“The ICCTA would like to recognize Frank Zuccarelli for 40 years of dedicated service to the Board of South Suburban College, Community College District 510, and the Illinois Community College System,” said Monaghan at the open meeting. “Of the more than 2,000 trustees to serve since 1965, Frank is one of only four still serving with 40 or more years of service. So this wasn’t by accident, this is all about his leadership.”

Zuccarelli, a South Holland resident and SSC alumnus, enrolled at SSC–then Thornton Community College–in 1974 after he completed his enlistment in the United States Air Force where he served as a medic. Zuccarelli earned his Associate of Science Degree in 1976 and his Associate of Arts Degree in 1978. He was elected to the unpaid post on the Board of Trustees in 1978, and was chosen by his peers to be the Chairman of the Board in 1987. He has served in this capacity for the college ever since.

“I would like to thank Mr. Monaghan and the ICCTA for this honor and especially all of the faculty, staff and administrators here now and through the years that I have had the privilege of serving with,” said Zuccarelli. “Our talented faculty are our best asset and they are what have kept me going here—all of us working together—that’s what makes it work and makes SSC so special.”

Established in 1927, South Suburban College is a fully accredited, comprehensive community college with a diverse annual student population of more than 10,000. Located in South Holland, Illinois, SSC offers over 100 educational and career pathways through associate degree, certificate and transfer programs.

SSC Echocardiography Garners Exclusive Accreditation, Graduates Earn 100% Pass Rate on National Licensing Exam

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College was recently notified that 100% of its 2018 Echocardiography Program graduates passed the critical certification exam of the CCI (Cardiovascular Credentialing International) for Registered Cardiac Sonographer. The news comes on the heels of the program’s first year under the exclusive accreditation of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The SSC Echocardiography Program is one of just three accredited by CAAHEP in the State of Illinois.

“We couldn’t be happier for our graduates on their success, and look forward to great things from them in the field of cardiac sonography,” said SSC’s Echocardiography Program Coordinator, Zubeir A. Haroun, MPH, MBChB, RDCS, RCS. “The quality of our program, technology and students just continues to grow. I’m very optimistic about our future and am very proud of the progressive collaboration of our Allied Health Department.”

SSC’s program received the maximum five year accreditation from CAAHEP – the main programmatic accreditor of the health sciences professions. In collaboration with its Committees on Accreditation, CAAHEP reviews and accredits over 2,100 individual education programs in 30 health science occupations. CAAHEP accredited programs are assessed on an ongoing basis to assure that they meet the Standards and Guidelines of each profession.

Haroun said the program currently works with eleven regional hospitals providing clinical opportunities, and graduates are employed at Loyola University Medical Center, Advocate Christ Hospital, Advocate Trinity, Ingalls among other prominent Chicagoland and Indiana hospitals and medical centers.

Echocardiography or cardiac sonography, is a medical test that uses sound waves of high frequencies (ultrasonic) to create moving and still images of the heart. These pictures show the size and shape of the heart and how well the heart’s chambers and valves and other structures are working. Echocardiography has become an important tool in diagnosing or helping to diagnose heart diseases and conditions, and skilled cardiac sonographers are in high demand.

Interested applicants must complete prerequisites prior to application to the Echo Program for a fall enrollment cycle. In total with prerequisites, SSC’s Echocardiography AAS Degree requires 71 credit hours for completion, while its EKG Basic Certificate requires 27 hours. For more information, contact Zubeir A. Haroun at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2204 or ZHaroun@ssc.edu, or visit options.ssc.edu.

SSC Lady Bulldogs Basketball Coach Darrell Scott Wins 500

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Darrell Scott earned his 500th victory as the leader of Lady Bulldogs. Scott recently reached the milestone with a 78-32 win on the road vs. Oakton Community College. The win catapulted Coach Scott’s career record at SSC to 500-395 since 1992.

“Even though this is a personal accomplishment, it’s still more of a team accomplishment to me,” said Coach Scott. “The number 500 is a testament to all of the student athletes that I have coached over these number of years—they put in the hard work and effort. They allowed me to push them and create an environment of success at South Suburban College. I’m very proud of what these young ladies have given me.”

Coach Scott is a 1987 graduate of Grinnell College and his 26 years at SSC have been his first and only head coaching job in the women’s ranks. He was inducted into to the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Region IV Hall of Fame in 2016.

Darrell Scott’s teams have made five appearances at the national tournament, have won five Regional Championships, and have been region finalists several more times. Scott also has coached 12 NJCAA All-Americans during his tenure.

Coach Scott added, “While we’ve had some great years, many good years, and a few decent years, each team is special and this year is no different. And I believe this 2018 team has a legitimate shot at getting back to the National Tournament.”

The Lady Bulldogs are 6-3 on the season at the time of this publication. SSC Athletics maintains the women’s teams of basketball, softball, volleyball and soccer, and the men’s teams of baseball, basketball and soccer. Fermin Barbosa’s Exhibition “Un Paseo Por el Mercado” Exhibiting at South Suburban College’s Dulgar Gallery

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present an exhibition of art works by Fermin Barbosa. “Un Paseo Por el Mercado” will be on display in the Dulgar Gallery from December 12th through the Artist Reception on January 23, 2019 at 12:30 p.m.

South Suburban College Nursing Graduates Receive 100% Pass Rate on National Exam

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– As the South Suburban College (SSC) Nursing Class of 2020 began their journey in August full of excitement and anticipation, the most recent graduates proudly achieved a 100% pass rate on the daunting NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) for registered nurses. NCLEX is a standardized exam that each state board of nursing uses to determine whether or not a candidate is prepared for entry-level nursing practice. SSC’s recent graduate success is the culmination of four consecutive years above the annual national average pass rates for an average of 94% since the program reopened in 2013.

South Holland resident Catherine Newport, 31, was one of the 2018 graduates. She is a wife and mom of two boys, and worked a full-time night shift while earning her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) at SSC. “I had a few personal struggles during my nursing education, but every single instructor I had was very supportive and willing to work with me,” said Newport. “Passing the NCLEX was surreal – immediately after finishing I remember thinking it was two years of the toughest program for a 35-minute test, but when I got my pass I was elated!”

Just two weeks after graduation Newport embarked on her nursing career at Community Hospital in Munster, IN, on a cardiovascular outpatient floor. “My clinical experience through SSC along with working as a PCT at Rush in the cardiac intensive care unit prepared me well for the workforce,” added Newport. “SSC’s program also showed me how independent and self-motivated I can be. But honestly, nothing fully prepares you for stepping on that nursing unit for the first time with people’s lives in your hands!”

The SSC Nursing Program has undergone a major transformation over the past five years, from revitalizing curriculum to providing innovative new student support systems and cutting-edge technology.

“New students are realizing the benefits of small class sizes and a student-centered approach,” said Dr. Lynette D. Stokes, SSC President. “While the smaller numbers are beneficial to student development and more one-on-one student-teacher instruction, we are really looking forward to growing the program and continuing to support our Nursing students in every way possible in the years to come.”

Immediate growth includes hiring two new full-time faculty and a lab supervisor, said Dr. Stokes. The faculty also look forward to the arrival of their newest acquisition—Victoria—a high fidelity birthing simulator. Long-term, the college is working to increase awareness to expand the Nursing student population with an eye toward a state-of-the-art Allied Health & Nursing Center, which is in the planning and development stage for the college’s Main Campus in South Holland.

The SSC Nursing Program is approved by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations (IDFPR) and the college is accredited by the North Central Higher Learning Commission (HLC), both critical components to proper credentialing and certification upon graduation. For more information about enrolling in the SSC Nursing Program at SSC, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2260. For information about the SSC Nursing job postings, please visit www.ssc.edu.

South Suburban College Cuts Ribbon on SSC Circle

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College hosted a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for a new state-of the-art facility called SSC Circle on November 8, 2018. SSC Circle is a student assistance center that will serve as a “one-stop-shop” for students with questions about the registration, financial aid and payment processes, and will be a new “front door” for first-time students, said Robin Rihacek, Executive Director of Enrollment & Retention Services.

“This facility has been a goal of ours for almost eight years,” said Rihacek. “It is so rewarding to see it come together because of donations as a part of our 90th Anniversary. SSC Circle is going to a great benefit to our students.”

The SSC Foundation launched the 90 for 90 Capital Campaign in 2017 in hopes of finally making SSC Circle a reality on campus. The campaign sought donations from college employees, alumni, board members and community partners throughout the college’s 90th Anniversary year with a goal to raise $90,000, which the college matched. All donors are recognized on a donor display in front of SSC Circle, located on the 2nd floor of the Main Campus in South Holland.
“SSC Circle is a great example of how much we can accomplish when we all work as a team to make a difference,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Chairman of the SSC Board of Trustees. “I would like to thank all of our donors who made this project possible so that SSC can continue to grow and provide the best possible services for our students.”
In addition to capital projects, the SSC Foundation provides students of all ages, backgrounds and academic pursuits with critical scholarship assistance. The Foundation once again awarded over $100,000 in scholarship funds for Academic Year 2019 and has now surpassed $2 million in total scholarships since 1989. The Foundation is currently seeking tax deductible donations for its annual Scholarship Donor Drive through the end of the year. Contact the SSC Foundation Office at (708) 225-5846, email foundation@ssc.edu or visit www.ssc.edu/foundation to learn more or to donate.

Court Reporting Program Open House Coming to Oak Forest December 6th

OAK FOREST, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting a Court Reporting Open House on Thursday, December 6th from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Oak Forest Center—Room 5190. The Open House will showcase this unique profession and wide-open job market, along with SSC’s program and curriculum. SSC is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and its Court Reporting Program is one of a few in the Chicagoland area that is certified by the National Court Reporters Association.

Court reporting is an interesting, challenging field that can provide a flexible work schedule with an income potential of $100,000 or more. Many closed-captioning reporters work out of their homes, for example. There is a severe shortage of skilled reporters in the Chicago area, and courts need court reporters to record trials ranging from the Laquan McDonald murder to car accidents. Reporters also provide closed captioning of live television such as the news and sporting events such as football, baseball, and basketball games to aid the hearing impaired.

Court reporters use machine shorthand to capture the spoken word quickly and accurately. The use of sophisticated computer equipment has broadened the nature of the profession. SSC’s program focuses on the theory behind it all, with an emphasis on judicial reporting.

To RSVP or for more information call (708) 596-2000, ext. 3217 or email LCooke@ssc.edu The Oak Forest Center is located at 16333 S. Kilbourn, Oak Forest, Illinois.

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) recently sent 10 students to the 2nd Annual DLS Conference at the Swiss Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, from October 19-20, 2018. Created BET media mogul Louis Carr, the exclusive dirty little secrets conference geared towards young African American men promotes leadership, community involvement, and strategies to succeed in work and life. Carr invited South Suburban to select a handful of student participants at no charge to expose them to the notable panel of highly successful leaders and entrepreneurs who were presenting at this year’s two-day event.

“This was a one of a kind opportunity to hear real life stories from highly successful men of color that truly motivated me to stay on the right track,” said Babatunde Adamson, 20, of Hazel Crest. “It was also an excellent networking event, and I was able to meet someone who will serve as my peer mentor.”

Self-proclaimed as “not a traditional conference – it’s a movement,” the DLS event was created to challenge men of color to become leaders in their communities. It aims to change the narrative by not only inspiring, but also by providing men tools and strategies to succeed immediately. Topics include Money, Entrepreneurship, Relationships and Health. DLS provides an environment that allows men to ask anything and give them the courage to hear a transparent, honest answer.

“DLS was a very informative event that had a great mix of celebrity and empowerment leaders sharing an amazing amount of wisdom about different approaches to life, goal setting and responding to challenges,” added Jaleel Harris, 24, of Chicago. “It’s a privilege to be a student and to get to experience unique and inspiring opportunities like these through South Suburban College.”

Louis Carr has generated 7 billion dollars in revenue over his 32-year career at BET Networks. He is the only African American to head up national sales for a major cable company. Serving BET’s President of Media Sales, Carr has transformed some of the biggest brands in the United States. A complete list of speakers and more conference details can be found from www.dlsmen.com

Former South Suburban Basketball Star Drafted into NBA G-League

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–Former Hillcrest High School and South Suburban College (SSC) men’s basketball star player – Jovan Mooring – was drafted in the first round by the Grand Rapids Drive of the National Basketball Association (NBA) G-League during their annual draft on October 13, 2018. Mooring, a 6’2” Guard, was the 13th pick overall.

“Jo Mooring is a ‘once in a lifetime’ player for any coach—he has a great feel for the game and his competitiveness and drive match his incredible talent,” said his South Suburban Head Coach, John Pigatti. “This is a huge day for Bulldogs Basketball to see one of our own get to the NBA, and congratulations to Jovan. He was a hard worker and a good student, and is an even better person. He still comes back to SSC when he’s home and practices with our kids.”

Mooring averaged 26.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.8 assist, and 3 steals per game during the 2015-16 season for the Bulldogs. With his production and leadership, the Bulldogs finished 3rd at the National Championship Tournament with a 34-3 record––good for best in the nation that year and tops in school history. Bulldogs Head Coach John Pigatti was named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Junior College Division II Coach of the Year after the season.

“It’s ironic that in one of the best performances I have ever seen, Jo scored 51 points for us at Grand Rapids Community College in 2016,” said Coach Pigatti. “He’s the only player I have ever coached to get a standing ovation from the crowd, when he walked off the court that night.”

Mooring was the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Player-of-the-Year at SSC before transferring to University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to play for the Rebels and 2015 Western Athletic Association Coach of the Year (WAC), Marvin Menzies. Laurie LeBreton’s “Evidence of Things Unseen” Exhibiting at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present an exhibition of art works by Laurie LeBreton “Evidence of Things Unseen,” from October 29th through the Artist Reception in the Lee Dulgar Gallery on November 27th at 10:30 a.m.

“I create my own evidence through sculpture, with handmade paper as my primary medium,” said LeBreton. “The creative interactions of others with their own spirits are a constant source of inspiration for me. Many of my influences come from popular religious culture: Haitian altars, Indian roadside shrines, 15th Century Japanese Buddhas and the simple artifacts sold outside South American cathedrals. For me, paper is the ideal medium to explore these ideas.”

LeBreton has exhibited widely in the Chicago area, across the country and internationally. She will have two solo shows this fall, and later in the year will be part of a three-person show at the Evanston Art Center.

The public is welcome to visit the art exhibition and reception at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is on the 1st Floor of SSC’s Main Campus. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. Ellen Campbell’s “La Louche” Exhibition at South Suburban College with Artist Reception Thursday

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present an exhibition of art works by Ellen Campbell titled “La Louche,” through an October 18th Artist Reception in the Lee Dulgar Gallery from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The animate world—the non-technical—what is generally called nature, is receding from the constructed world. What remains are denatured, proliferating and commodified expressions of a largely abandoned place, ersatz images and products that pretend to the natural; the souvenirs of spoliation. Campbell uses these manufactured, denatured renditions of the organic world to create new visual and psychological relationships, accommodating the malformed nostalgia of cheap goods to reanimate them in a fantastical state of nature. Through shifts and palette and an intimate close-up perspective she attempts to mirror the tension between the technological accelerations of modern existence and the wished-for endurance of the natural world.

Ellen Campbell’s paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions at galleries and cultural centers in Brooklyn, Minneapolis, Iowa and Chicago. Campbell is also the recipient of numerous awards and honors including Yaddo and Ucross Foundation artist residencies. In addition, her work is in many private and corporate collections. Ellen Campbell received her M.F.A. from the University of Chicago and her B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. She lives, works and teaches in Chicago.

The PAC Rats Theatre Company of South Suburban College Presents Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Spies, murder, love, suspense and other trademarks of Alfred Hitchcock come to life at South Suburban College’s Kindig Performing Arts Center. Performances will take place on September 21 and 28, 2018, at 7:30 p.m., and September 22, 29 and 30, 2018, at 2:00 p.m.

Through the magic of live sound effects and musical underscoring, Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play is a triple feature that recreates a daring train chase, a serial killer’s ominous presence, and a devastating revelation of spies and subterfuge. The stage setting is that of a typical radio station of the 1940s. The PAC Rats Radio Players perform not only the characters for The Lodger, Sabotage and The 39 Steps, but also generate the wide variety of sound effects needed to bring the stories to life.

The show is directed by Lansing resident Sandra Wagner, who has a passion for the Old Time Radio genre. “The creation of live sound effects is a true art form,” said Wagner. “It’s also called ‘foley’ after movie sound pioneer Jack Foley. Legend has it that Jack walked 5000 miles in the studio doing footsteps. He was a true genius.”

Vintage Hitchcock, written by Joe Landry, features the vocal and foley talents of Heather Young of Chicago, Sabrina Smith of Dolton, Paul Braun of Highland, IN, Bob Colton, Marilyn Kopacz and Pat Nevins, all from Homewood, Charlie Furtek of Lansing, Kevin Hathaway of Park Forest, Kimberly Azana of Posen, Malcolm Banks of Riverdale, Catherine Hundt, Chris Johnson and Ashley Orendorff, all from Thornton.

The behind the scenes artists are costume designer JoAnna Tassin of Park Forest with costume assistants Joan Sehlke of Dolton, and Judy Welch of Sauk Village. The sound engineer is Jordan Swierczyna of Robbins. Angela Martin of Midlothian is the production manager. June Wagner is the stage manager and Ellie Shunko is the set designer, both of whom are from Lansing.

Marybeth Beno Named Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– Marybeth Beno, of Flossmoor, was recently presented with the Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year award at South Suburban College. The recognition represents a culmination of emotions rooted in 35 years of distinguished, loyal service to students of all ages and backgrounds. For Beno, who will be retiring at the end of this academic year, it was always about the students.

“I feel very honored. It’s always nice to be recognized for doing a good job, especially after pouring your entire heart and soul into your career for over three decades,” said Beno.

Beno ran into one of her former students who let her know if it weren’t for her teaching methods and encouragement, he wouldn’t have made it through her class and engineering school. “When students thank you at the conclusion of a semester, or when you run into a former student who tells you that your class made a difference in their lives, it’s the best feeling!”

Beno is a firm believer that community college is the best place to start for college degree seekers. All three of her children attended SSC before completing their Bachelor’s Degrees at DePaul and Purdue and becoming gainfully employed in their chosen fields. “Faculty and staff here really care about one another and the students. Our decisions are based on student needs and student success.”

Beno said receiving the award and reflecting on her career is bittersweet knowing she’s facing her “last syllabus, last PowerPoint, last final exam week… I will miss the students, my office, and seeing my friends every day. But, with every ending, there’s a new beginning. I have three little people who mean the world to me. Mikey is 4, Sydney is 1, and Haley is brand new. I will see them as often as I can and watch them grow.”

Marybeth Beno always wanted to teach. She played school with her sister when she was young, and she was always the teacher. They had a blackboard in their basement and worked on math problems together. Soon, it will be time to dust off the old blackboard for her three little people.

SSC’s Marybeth Beno was presented with the Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year award by College President Donald Manning..

Artist Mark Frazer Opens a Solo Exhibition “Fruit Fly: Summer of the Grasshopper” in Photo Four Gallery of South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL –The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition titled “Fruit Fly: Summer of the Grasshopper,” by artist Mark Frazer in the Photo Four Gallery from now through September 12, with a closing reception on September 12 at 12:30. The Photo Four Gallery is located in Room 4338 on the 4th Floor of SSC’s Main Campus.

Mark Frazer has been living in Chicago since 1995 and creating art since about 1990. In 2016, he got a phone with a great camera to document his artwork in color pencil. He had just completed a 10-year mandala series. After documenting his artwork, Frazer got to play with his phone camera. In the process, he discovered a technique of multiple exposures in a single shot and then started creating a series of images which he began to call “grasshopping.” Each image is the same motion, the same rhythm, like a haiku, one shot, like a movie still…a rhythm of a breath of a moment. Mark ended up with almost 3000 different images. He limited the series to his commute to and from work and walks around his Chicago neighborhood.

SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge.

Lynette D. Stokes, Ed.D., Named Incoming South Suburban College President

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The South Suburban College Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Lynette D. Stokes, Ed.D., the incoming President of South Suburban College.

Dr. Stokes will be the first woman President in SSC’s history.

Stokes, currently serving as Vice President of Academic Services at SSC, will officially assume leadership of the college when the current President, Donald Manning, retires on October 1, 2018.

“The entire Board of Trustees and I believe that Lynette is exactly the kind of leader our college requires as we move forward,” Chairman Frank Zuccarelli said. “She is experienced, energetic and collaborative and places a high value on partnering with the community.”

Asked to describe her purpose in life, Dr. Stokes offered a quote that has always served as an inspiration and guiding light throughout her life: ‘the purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, honorable, compassionate and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.’

“That exemplifies who Lynette Stokes is, Zuccarelli continued. “She has been a youth advocate in the child welfare system – passionately involved with Ada S. McKinley Foster Care Services, an elementary school teacher and active in equal rights organizations.”

“Her commitment to lifelong learning led her to return to school herself – earning both Master of Arts and Doctoral Degrees from Roosevelt University in Public Administration and Educational Leadership. Dr. Stokes has dedicated her life and career to structuring and sustaining strong educational institutions and making a real difference in people’s lives. Every Trustee on the Board and I are enthusiastic about working closely with Lynette to advance our mission and serve our community,” Zuccarelli concluded.

In addition to her vast experience and accomplishments in higher education and child welfare, Dr. Stokes was the recipient of Roosevelt University’s ‘Most Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Award” in 2005, the “Kathy Osterman Award for Outstanding Public Service Supervision” and the 2014 Chicago Defender’s “Women of Excellence Award.” Dr. Stokes resides in South Holland with her family.

Stokes will succeed President Donald Manning, who led the college for the past six years and who announced his retirement last March. Manning assumed leadership of the college in 2012 – overseeing increased academic programming options and the transformational revitalization of the college’s Oak Forest Campus.

“I am confident that in Lynette Stokes, the Board of Trustees has chosen a person with the right approach to educational leadership and management and who will lead a renewed commitment to our mission,” Manning said. “Lynette will advance a bright future for this important and critical institution serving the needs of the South suburbs in so many ways.”

Chairman Zuccarelli thanked President Manning for his thirty-one years of exemplary service. “Don has been an indispensable part of our college family and I believe I can speak for all the Trustees and everyone at SSC in saying that we will miss Don’s energy, expertise and dedication. The entire Board and I want to extend our best wishes to Don, as he and his wife Jill move on to this new chapter in their lives. Don, thank you so much for your work, your leadership and friendship.”

Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/Legal Assistant curriculum, including the Associate Degree and certificate programs. In addition, former students from the program, working as paralegals, will be present to answer questions.

The curriculum prepares students to work in a variety of legal environments including civil and criminal litigation, insurance, banking, public and governmental agencies, law offices and corporate legal departments. Emphasis is placed on the development of core skills in legal research and writing techniques including compilation and analysis of data, understanding legal vocabulary, law office technology, and preparation of legal documents.

“Whether you are looking for a change in your career path or looking to begin a career, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the law,” says Jason Cieslik, J.D., Coordinator for the Legal Studies Program.

SSC has the only American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program in the Chicago Southland region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workforce. The college also requires that all of the instructors in the program are lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction.

While the majority of the paralegal classes are offered at the Oak Forest Center (conveniently located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue), some classes are offered online and some are offered at the Main Campus in South Holland.

One Million Degrees Student Supports and Volunteer Opportunities Open at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – One Million Degrees (OMD) Chicago, a nonprofit organization that empowers low-income, highly motivated community college students to succeed in school, in work, and in life—is expanding to South Suburban College (SSC). The organization is currently recruiting Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC) residents who will be enrolled full-time at South Suburban in fall 2018 to enroll in the OMD program.

Students (“scholars”) enrolled in the OMD Program receive access to the organization’s comprehensive on-campus supports, including free tutoring, monthly mentoring from a volunteer professional, career development services, and up to $1,000 annually in cash stipends.

There are limited spots available so current and prospective SSC students are encouraged to apply today at www.onemilliondegrees.org/apply or contact Neal Spann at nspann@onemilliondegrees.org. Eligible students must be HACC residents or voucher recipients, have a 1.8 GPA or higher, be enrolled full-time in fall 2018, apply and receive the Pell grant, and qualify for in-district tuition at SSC.

To work with the expanded student populations at SSC, OMD is recruiting volunteer mentors (“coaches”) to provide monthly in-person professional guidance and supports. OMD Coaches provide one-on-one and small-group professional and personal support throughout the academic year, while helping broaden scholars’ horizons of career aspirations and possibilities. Coaches are supported with ongoing training by OMD, and also have opportunities to connect with fellow coaches to expand their own professional networks.

Coaches give just a few hours each month and make a profound difference in the lives of OMD Scholars. “I have loved my mentee and everything about my mentoring experience at OMD,” said coach Neha Gupta, HR Specialist at PwC, “The two hours I spend monthly with my mentee are easily the two most meaningful hours of my month!”

Current and retired professionals from a variety of fields are encouraged to apply today to become a volunteer coach, which has a one academic year (September – May) commitment. Applications are now open at www.onemilliondegrees.org/coach.

OMD provides a variety of holistic supports—financial assistance, mentoring, academic interventions and professional development—to hundreds of community college students each year. It is one of the only organizations in the country working directly with low-income community college students. OMD Scholars graduate from college at over two times the national average. Upon completion, its scholars transfer to four-year colleges and universities to earn their bachelor’s degrees and enter the workforce in high-demand fields, such as health care, IT and engineering. OMD Scholars build better futures for themselves, their families and their communities, while helping to strengthen the local and national economy. In the 2018-2019 academic year, OMD will serve up to 850 scholars across all of its program locations including South Suburban College.

One Million Degrees believes that when given a solid system of support, every student has the ability to reach his or her full personal and professional potential. Since 2006, One Million Degrees has provided critical supports to help empower hundreds of community college students to succeed in the classroom and beyond. One Million Degrees Scholars are equipped with the skills necessary to help them reach their full potential in school, in work, and in life. To learn more about One Million Degrees, please visit www.onemilliondegrees.org.

Brent Fogt’s “Re Pose” Exhibition at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present a new exhibition located in the Dulgar Gallery on SSC’s Main Campus in South Holland. An exhibition of art works by Brent Fogt titled “Re Pose” is on display through August 30, 2018. Reception date for Fogt is to be announced.

Brent Fogt has completed artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Djerassi Resident Artists Program, I-Park Foundation and Yaddo. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.

Fogt describes his art in this way: “My research and artwork focus on how small, discrete actions—additions, subtractions, divisions—accumulate over time. I create slender, off-kilter sculptures by assembling fallen tree branches, discarded furniture, worn-out clothing, and other cast-off materials that I rescue from the streets and dumpsters of my Chicago neighborhood. I suture the branches and prefabricated furniture by screwing, wrapping, or crocheting them together with cotton yarn or jute. The resulting sculptures may hang from ceilings, lean against walls, or rest precariously on floors. By placing humble, weathered materials into predefined architectural spaces, my artwork points to daily activities like standing, sitting and walking that require us to physically balance ourselves and our surroundings.”

The public is welcome to visit the art exhibition and reception at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is on the first floor. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays.

For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2445 or ext. 2316, or visit www.ssc.edu/art. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

The South Suburban Chicago Chapter of the Links Awards “Full-Ride” Scholarships to Three SSC Students

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The South Suburban Chicago Chapter of the Links presented $15,000 in scholarship funds to South Suburban College students Jasmine Carter (Country Club Hills), Cherise Miskell (Dolton), and Adeline Hodge (South Holland) at the SSC Foundation’s Academic Achievement Reception May 8th. All three women are excellent students with GPAs ranging from 3.2-4.0, and Ms. Carter is studying Radiologic Technology, Miskell is a Science major, and Hodge is pursuing her Business degree.

The South Suburban Chicago Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, has served the South Suburban community for over 40 years by providing financial and educational support with social and civic awareness to enrich and ensure the cultural and economic growth of our communities. The Links has had a relationship with the SSC Foundation for nearly 10 years, sharing in like-missions and providing scholarship funding.

“The South Suburban College Foundation’s mission to support the educational objectives of SSC with the primary focus on student scholarships aligns with our mission to give back to our community by providing scholarships to deserving students,” said Jacqueline James Lewis, Links President. “The South Suburban Chicago Links are extremely grateful for the opportunity to support the educational component of this mission by providing three, $5,000 scholarships. We are so pleased with this partnership and the newly established South Suburban Chicago Chapter of The Links Scholarship Fund.”

The SSC Foundation provides students of all ages, backgrounds and academic pursuits with critical scholarship assistance. Many SSC students are struggling to balance family, employment, and school responsibilities while they are often unable to receive Financial Aid. Scholarship money is raised primarily through the annual spring Showcase Gala and fall Scholarship Donor Drive, providing both a charitable gift opportunity and tax-deduction for all donors. The SSC Foundation once again awarded over $100,000 in scholarship funds for Academic Year 2019 and has now surpassed $2 million in total scholarships since 1989.

All three of the Links recipients said their scholarships would have a significant, lasting impact on their lives and Ms. Carter added, “This scholarship is just the beginning to a new journey and helping me to complete my goals.”

Playwright Joe Landry has adapted three of Alfred Hitchcock’s earlier films into suspenseful dramas in the style of a 1940s radio broadcast. The Lodger, Sabotage and The 39 Steps form a triple feature that recreates a daring train chase, a serial killer’s ominous presence and a devastating explosion complete with live sound effects performed on stage.

“We’re looking for good speaking voices for the many characters in the three stories,” says director Sandra Wagner of Lansing. “Some characters have one or two lines each, some are main characters. Actors could play more than one role, so the ability to do multiple voices or dialects is a plus, but not a must.”

Wagner is planning evening rehearsals. Performances are scheduled for September 21 and 28, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. and September 22, 29 and 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

In addition to acting talent, the PAC Rats are also seeking volunteers to create the many live sound effects or who want to try their hands backstage, building and painting scenery. If you want to get your feet wet with something small or large, this is your opportunity!

Auditions are open to all community members as well as SSC students, aged 18 or older. Appointments and prepared audition materials are not necessary. Auditioners will read from scenes, which will be available at the time of auditions. Copies of the script are on reserve in the SSC library. Everyone is welcome to attend both auditions. Be prepared to list all conflicts with the rehearsal schedule.

For character descriptions, rehearsal schedule and more information, visit the Kindig Performing Arts Center’s website at http://learn.ssc.edu/theatre/ or email ssctheatre@ssc.edu.

Each team is responsible for developing and testing a prototype rover, forming a company infrastructure, managing a budget, and developing communications and outreach. The onsite experience at NASA includes briefings by NASA subject matter experts, information on how to apply for internships and a tour of NASA’s unique facilities.

NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars is activity funded in part by the Minority University Research and Education Program, or MUREP, which is committed to engaging underrepresented and underserved students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in authentic learning experiences to sustain a diverse workforce.
With this activity, NASA continues the agency’s tradition of engaging the nation in NASA’s mission. “NCAS not only inspires community college students to advance in STEM fields, but it also opens doors for future careers at NASA. NCAS has a legacy of alumni moving from NASA internships to and ultimately entering the NASA workforce. It is rewarding to see the progression of a student from NCAS participant to NASA colleague,” stated Joeletta Patrick, Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Manager.

SSC Foundation Awards $100,000 in Scholarships to Local College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL –The South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) once again awarded over $100,000 in scholarship funds for Academic Year 2019 to local students at the college’s annual Academic Achievement Reception on May 8, 2018. In doing so, the SSC Foundation surpassed the $2 million milestone in total scholarships since it began awarding them in 1989.

“It is an honor to serve on this board and to be able to assist so many deserving students to begin and continue their college dreams,” said Tim Woloszyn of MB Financial Bank, and SSC Foundation President. “The $2 million milestone is tribute to all of the countless donors over the years – SSC employees, alumni, members of our community and Foundation directors who have generously supported these scholarship programs. South Suburban College is a fine institution and plays a critical role in our community.”

Whether the recipient is high school graduate, an unemployed resident looking for a career change, or a single parent pursuing their college degree for the first time, the SSCF offers scholarship assistance to all students in need. Many are struggling to balance family, employment, and school responsibilities while they are often unable to receive Financial Aid. Scholarship money is raised primarily through the annual spring Showcase Gala and fall Scholarship Donor Drive providing both a charitable gift opportunity and tax-deduction for all donors.

Woloszyn added that the SSC Foundation has further assisted the college with nearly $1 million in other special student projects, facility and technology improvements that are otherwise not in the college budget.

Making a donation can be an easy and affordable way to leave a lasting legacy–the SSCF staff works cooperatively with individuals and organizations to develop a donor plan of any level. New scholarships may also be established with naming rights or in memorial for a minimum of just $1,000. Donations may be made online from www.ssc.edu/foundation, via PayPal to foundation@ssc.edu, or via cash, check or bequest.

At SSC, 90% of students fall under the low income, first generation or disabled criteria. Established in 1973, the SSCF is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization chartered in the State of Illinois and is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization (EIN: 237191738). For more information, please contact the Foundation Office at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2463 or foundation@ssc.edu.

South Suburban College Alumna Finds Success in Legal Field

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – LaTanya Allen, who in 2010 earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree from the Court Reporting/Verbatim Technology Program at South Suburban College (SSC), was recently sworn in as President of the Mississippi Court Reporters Association, making her the third African-American to hold that position in their 53-year history. She is also a member of the National Court Reporters Association, serves on the National Committee of State Associations (NCSA), and was featured in the Journal of Court Reporters magazine for her dedication to her profession. LaTanya said, “I love court reporting and it has definitely delivered the results I anticipated.”

LaTanya credits the program and instructors at SSC. “I entered an environment where my teachers really cared about me and my education – especially LaTherese Cooke. She was always there for me during school and continues to be there for me to this day when asking for advice about choices to make in my profession.”

After graduating from SSC, LaTanya passed the Registered Professional Reporter examination given by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). This certification allowed her to become a court reporter in any state in the nation. She eventually moved back to Mississippi and is currently the official court reporter for the 11th Chancery Court District (sub-district 1). She works with a chancellor and travels between three different locations in her position. She enjoys her current role in the judicial system stating, “I’ve been a part of some really amazing hearings and court trials.”

LaTanya’s admiration for the legal field is just beginning with court reporting. She stated, “The knowledge that comes within the field, in addition to the research, studying and strategy of it all made me want to go back to get my paralegal degree.” LaTanya also holds the title of “Certified Court Administrator” and she will be taking her entrance exam for law school soon.

“I would definitely not be where I am today if SSC didn’t initially reach out to me and open the door to the amazing field of court reporting,” said LaTanya. “I’m proud to be an alumni and can’t wait to see what else the legal field has in store for me.”

A Court Reporting/Verbatim Technology Program open house will be held on July 26, 2018 between 7 PM and 8:30 PM in room 5190 at SSC’s Oak Forest Center. Contact (708)596-2000 ext. 3217 or visit www.ssc.edu for more information.

South Suburban College Adult Volunteer Literacy Program Seeking Volunteer Tutors and Offering Free Services

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program.

New tutor training sessions will take place at the Main Campus in South Holland on May 22nd & 24th from 4pm until 6pm and May 29th & 31st from 4pm until 6pm. Come join our Literacy Program and help us start this summer off right! The tutor training is a 12-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. We offer online training as well. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring is scheduled by the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites.

Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

Tutors will receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

If you would like to register for the upcoming volunteer tutor training class please register, or if you know someone who could benefit from tutoring services, please contact Raylynn Stokes, Literacy Coach of the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email rstokes@ssc.edu. SSC’s 10th Anniversary Women’s Conference a Huge Success

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Women’s History Month may have come and gone, the event chairpersons (Alexandra Glumac and Rebecca Garcia-Westburg) of South Suburban College’s 10th Anniversary Women’s Conference now know what others have suspected all along—this year’s Women’s Conference was a huge success!

From the thought-provoking line-up of guest speakers to the exciting display of vendors, women from across the Chicagoland region showed their support for this year’s conference by participating in a day of events dedicated to them. With the theme, “Be Your Own Superhero,” women certainly embraced this motto and came out to hear how they too can be their very best and begin their “Superhero” journey of self-empowerment and improvement.

The event began with a continental breakfast followed by the dynamic keynote speaker, Felicia Houston. Ms. Houston, Community Development Liaison with U of Chicago Medicine Ingalls and current President of the Professional Women’s Network, began her presentation with audience engagement and gave the participants something to hang onto with her version of what each letter of the word, “SUPERHERO” stands for such as S=Strong, Supportive to O=Optimistic, Open-Minded! The participants then chose workshops sessions to attend and from the positive feedback received, the sessions were both informative and educational. An afternoon break with lunch was followed with a fashion show, more sessions and line dancing.

The conference also recognized individual women through the STAR Awards, given to acknowledge remarkable women for their professional and/or volunteer accomplishments and leadership. This year three women received awards: The special South Suburban College Lifetime Alumna Award recognized Coreen (Cory) Clark, a graduate of the SSC Registered Nursing Program. The STAR Award was presented to Erika Gilchrist and an honorable mention STAR Certificate was awarded to Rhonda Zaluckyj. For the first time ever, The Chicago Women’s Conference also offered a competitive selection scholarship for women and high school girls who attended this year’s conference. Selection of the winner is in progress.

With the successful event now completed and the Women’s Conference Committee having seen the fruits of their labor, a special thanks is given to the following various sub-committees and/or individuals for their dedication and commitment to the 10th Anniversary Women’s Conference: Rhonda Browne, Patrice Burton, Felicia Houston, Erica Humphrey, Blevian Moore, Jacki Rivera, Alysia Robinette, Hella Bowker and LaTasha Binder.

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Two South Suburban College (SSC) students were recognized at the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Illinois Academic Team Banquet in Springfield, Illinois on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Students Jada Muldrow and Ifeoma Onwumelu were accompanied by Joan Rosen, faculty advisor for Phi Theta Kappa at SSC, and Dr. Lynette Stokes, Vice President of Academic Services at SSC.

“Travelling to Springfield was an awesome experience,” said Onwumelu. “I appreciate how PTK recognizes our achievements because it pushes me to do more academically. Being surrounded by so many positive people in this honor society makes me a more positive person. It’s an honor to be a member of this organization.”
The PTK Honor Society is the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs, particularly state and community colleges. The society has recognized and encouraged scholarship among two-year college students by providing 100 years of stimulation and enrichment, while promoting the academic integrity of the associate degree program. The society is headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi and has more than 2 million members in more than 1,250 chapters. South Suburban College has a local chapter of PTK Honor Society.

“PTK is an amazing organization that helps bring out the best in its members – academically and socially – and showcases the achievements made by everyone included,” added Muldrow. “Some of the major benefits of joining PTK include getting to indulge in an honor society that truly cares for its members, helping out the community in and around SSC, and being part of a club/fraternity that is internationally based.”
The mission of PTK is to recognize academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders. To achieve this purpose, PTK provides opportunities for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. The PTK All-USA Academic Team is sponsored annually by PTK, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges.

“100 Years of American History” Coming to South Suburban College March 24 and 27

SOUTH HOLLAND — A three-hour seminar touring through Illinois community colleges that recounts the past 100 years of American history in news photos and Hollywood film clips will be presented by the Continuing Education department of South Suburban College at its Oak Forest campus March 24, and at the main campus in South Holland March 27. Everyone is invited to register to attend.

“U.S. History and Today,” is a fast-paced, visually-rich presentation that features 600 historic photographs and 44 popular film and music clips highlighting American life between 1914 and present day. Topics range from both World Wars and The Great Depression to Vietnam, the turbulent 1960s, and surprising presidential elections. Entertainment highlights include Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Elvis Presley, Emma Stone, scenes from “Back to the Future, “The Andy Griffith Show” and more.

“It’s a century of American history at high speed,” said one attendee, who applauded the mix of hard-hitting, fact-based history and pop culture. Reviews from showings at five Illinois community colleges to date have been enthusiastic.

The show is presented by John LeGear, a builder and promoter of national not-for-profit organizations who turned his attention to American history late in his career. He employs skills acquired as a journalist, photographer, video editor and public speaker to assemble the presentation. LeGear created the show to lend balance and historical perspective to today’s rollercoaster ride of news events. The seminar is suitable for audiences of high school age and over. Senior citizens have been especially supportive of the show, often describing it as “a walk down memory lane.”

“U.S. History and Today” is a visually-rich three-hour show that is touring through 15 Illinois community colleges this year. A registration fee of $10 is required. The seminar will be held at SSC’s Oak Forest Center, 16333 S. Kilbourn Ave., on Saturday, March 24 from 9 am to noon. An evening presentation starting at 6 pm is scheduled on March 27 in Room 3339 at SSC’s main campus building, 15800 S. State Street, South Holland. SSC’s Continuing Education members can enroll online. In-person registration is welcomed at both facilities from 8 am to 6:45 pm Monday thru Thursday, and until 3:45 pm on Friday. For more information, call the Oak Forest Center at 708-225-6000 or SSC’s Deborah Ravazee at 708-596-2000 (ext. 2231).

SOUTH HOLLAND – South Suburban College kicked off Women’s History Month with a free one-woman stage act about Harriet Tubman on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in the Kindig Performing Arts Center at 11:00 a.m. Veteran actress, vocalist, director, and playwright Cynthia Maddox wowed the crowd that included students from elementary, high school, and college as well as community members. History and heritage have long been dominant and recurring themes in her performances.

Maddox’s one-woman stage act highlighted the trials and tribulations of Harriet Tubman, a true American “she-ro.” Tubman was an abolitionist, humanitarian, and during the American Civil War, a Union spy. She is best known as a “conductor” for the Underground Railroad. This “railroad” had numerous stops in Illinois.

Playwright Wesley Perkins Returns to South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The SSC Playhouse announces the return of alumnus Wesley Perkins in a very different role. “Happy Birthday, Henry Snikrep” is Perkins’ first full-length comedy and is also the first play written by a former student to be performed at the college under the direction of South Suburban College’s Theatre Program Coordinator and SSC Playhouse Director Bobbie Saltzman.

Markham resident Perkins majored in theatre while he was an SSC student. He chose South Suburban College because it was convenient. While there he became a part of the SSC Playhouse, acting in productions such as “Godspell,” “Oklahoma,” “Grease” and “Man of LaMancha.”

Said Perkins, “The main mentor I had was Bobbie Saltzman…Bobbie has always put these shows together effortlessly, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. Not just acting in shows, but eventually write them, do the lighting, and build the structures… She’s always been there and she has such a kind and open heart. I’ve always just looked at her not only as an instructor and mentor, but as family.”

Inspired by Tyler Perry’s rags to riches story, Perkins’ eventual goal is to become an actor and own his own small theatre. Wesley got hooked on theatre early when his 4th grade class went to see “The Wizard of Oz. “Working in theatre isn’t a hobby, noted Perkins, “That’s actually what I hope to do.”

“Happy Birthday, Henry Snikrep” took about five years to write and is based upon Perkins’ own experiences. In this wild comedy, the title character, crabby old Henry Snikrep, is about to have a surprise party, but don’t tell him the news. He hates his family and a party would kill him, which it does. Now just about every crazy relative is coming to his funeral. The question is: will any one of them survive the mess? Perkins will also be acting in the play. “This is the biggest play I’ve written,” he said, “and the first one that will actually be open to the community.”

South Suburban College is located at 15800 State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294. Free, ample parking is available.

Performances will run April 25 to April 29, 2018 with Wednesday through Saturday shows at 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the 24/7 box office voicemail line at (708) 210-5741. Leave your name and phone number and someone will return your call.
